BONUS #2: Star Trek Continues, episode 1 "Pilgrim of Eternity"

Written by Jack Marshall & Vic Mignogna, directed by Vic Mignogna

Stardate 6147.3 (sometime in 2269)

"You never considered there may be another way. A better way." - Kirk

While investigating why power stations in the area are being drained, the Enterprise herself begins to lose power. At the same time they find an unknown object floating off the power station and identify it as the source of the power drain. Captain Kirk tries hailing it but as the ship gets close to completely losing power, he feels there is no choice but to destroy the object. Just after launching a torpedo, Spock identifies two life forms within the object. With the Enterprise almost dead, and Doctor McCoy protesting, Kirk allows the torpedo to reach its target and watch it explode. While they lament being forced to make a difficult choice, two alien materialize on the bridge - A very old Apollo and Athena. Everyone immediately assumes the worse, but then watch as Athena's last life force fades and she dies Apollo's arms... and Apollo announces he no longer seeks their worship but asks for their help.

Go watch some of the behind the scenes and production stuff they did too. They put so much love and passion into making this and it shows. I honestly could have gone for another dozen episodes easily.

I know. Getting Michael Forest back was enough of a coup. But also getting Jamie Bamber, who played Lee “Apollo” Adama on the reimagined Battlestar Galactica is just being cheeky.

“Sorry, Bamber, we could only cast you as a redshirt, bye bye!”

And Marina Sirtis is immediately recognizable as the ship’s computer. In the previous bonus episode, Fairest of Them All, Michael Dorn was the computer voice on the ISS Enterprise.

Bonus #2 through #10 take place after all of TOS and TAS. I am going to start posting them now, one a week, so that there's no gap between the end of the two original series and The Motion Picture. If you want to watch in Stardate order, keep following the Master List.

Definitely a nice job on production, but the uncanny valley aspect is the one that always trips me up in fan remakes like this. Unsurprisingly, Chris Doohan is easiest for me to imagine as Scotty, and Wyatt Lenhart (Chekov) works well enough. They look reasonably close, and do a nice job with the accents.

The rest of the main cast unfortunately look only vaguely like the originals, don't sound like them at all, and worse, don't seem to have captured their mannerisms and vocal tics, etc. Sure, I get that makeup can only take you so far, and that casting was probably quite limited, but getting the voices and mannerisms right is mainly a matter of practice... which they seem to have put very little work in to. As someone with a very unremarkable voice who nevertheless learned to do a variety of speaking and singing impressions, I guess it's hard for me to understand what happened there.

So, basically-- you want to summon up TOS? Then why not put in that specific acting / imitation work? I think the difference in appearances would have been much minimized if that had happened. Otherwise, I'm cool with just reimagining another vessel / setting, as with "Farragut" and several other fan series on the animated side. There was one specifically that I thought worked very nicely... maybe from 20-25yrs ago, in which a two-person human and vulcan repair crew had their own set of mini-adventures. Both female, and both actually voiced by the same actress, but she did a great job making their voices very distinct.

That said, I'm glad this series was well-received, as it otherwise seemed fairly impressive, with solid stories as well. It would really suck to put in all that work just to have it ruined by sourpusses like me. 😅
