Reasons to dislike AI coding

Code as Art I covered this before in Art or tool? If you think of software as artistic output then generated software isn't real because it doesn't have the creative ineffability that's a sign of true art. There's no argument against this one except that the people who want software typically aren't paying for artworks,...

Points from the article:

  • As long as the result works, it's fine.

  • You're still getting paid, just write prompts not code.

  • Automation happened before, this is just a new iteration, and this time the means of production is your head so it's easy to seize.

  • People copied from Stack Overflow before, now it's just automated.

  • Just use academic and community models if you dislike mainstream ones.

I don't think I buy any of his arguments, it's like he's trying to manipulate me into helping him sell some kind of "AI" services of his employer.

Except that the job was never to type code, it was to deliver valuable software. People who can still do that can still get paid by organisations that need that to be done.

Yeah but probably not nearly as much.

You still need to know how to code to vibe code effectively today, but at the rate things are improving I wouldn't bet on that still being true in a year.

Programmers have had insane salaries compared to the average white collar jobs for decades. That might end. 😭
