[help] Does the XBOX Series S console have internal volume control?

3 days ago by thingsiplay to c/games

Edit: I decided to use the internal speakers of the TV, as they are not as bad as I remembered them. So this is no longer an issue for me.

I connected the Series S console to my secondary display, a bigger and old TV from 2010 via HDMI. I use the TVs audio output to connect it with my speakers AUX input, so I can use the same speakers used by my PC. Everything is fine, besides the console is a bit too loud. It always outputs at 100% volume and I have to volume down my speakers with the knob. Sounds reasonable, but then my PC gets too much muted, even on 100% output from PC. Changing the volume on the TV just changes the output for its own internal speakers.

Ideally I would like to control the volume for audio output from XBOX. But it seems not to have any such settings. Any idea what I can do?

Background: I got the console from my brother and played a bit around with it back then. It's been 3 years since I used the console last. As a Linux PC Gamer, there are times when I can't play certain games. In such cases a console could help, because I do not want to install Windows. I have an old account and it was painful to get it all running again, with back and forth of accounts, emails and pins and passwords. Modern gaming.

I don't believe it does. The only settings I know of are for changing the balance for headset audio.

Thanks. So this confirms it for me then. I guess that I'm buying additional speaker dedicated for this setup then. Or alternatively an external volume control knob in between cable and speaker. The internal speaker from the old TV is terrible. Thanks Philips and Microsoft.

If you can connect headphones to your TV via Bluetooth, might be a reasonable workaround fwiw. That’s what I do.

In fact I generally have to remote play to my phone/tablet and connect my Headphones to that and use the audio from there, since I keep my Xbox hooked up to a computer monitor that does not have any built in speakers.

Hmm no, the TV doesn't have Bluetooth. My speakers have Bluetooth connection, but can't find a setting in the XBOX to initiate a connection.

But otherwise I just noticed the audio from the TV isn't as bad as I remember it had. I can actually play a game with this, so this is no longer an issue for me. I think I got confused with the builtin speakers from my older monitor.

You can solve with a HDMI audio extractor with a volume knob, I use it in chain with a HDMI switch and I can easily control every device.

I saw it online when researching. Guess that would be the most direct and cheapest (as in overall price) solution for me. Soon is Black Friday, I'll probably buy one then. But for now I noticed the TV speakers aren't as bad as I thought. So its no longer a critical issue to solve as fast as possible. I think I'm going with a volume knob too if I see a good price (actually those aren't even expensive?), because using the speakers would be a little bit better. Thanks for the tip.

Have you tried to boost your PC volume using easyeffects? It's a great audio utility with a lot of plugins to manage your audio output.

I can actually boost the audio with builtin methods on the PC operating system. But I get a warning doing that for longer period of time will damage the speakers. I don't actually think it would damage the speakers as I will lower it then. I'm just not sure if this is an ideal solution.

Hmm strange, which distro are you using? If you put a volume limiter at 0db there's no risk for the speakers. If you boost form easyeffects the warning should not appear in any case.
