Inside the Failed Fight to Unionize Double Fine

Others spoke of feeling outright betrayed by the union effort. “I have never been scared about losing my job until that letter came out,” wrote the same employee who had been leading much of the anti-union discussion in a Slack message. “It has created both uncertainty of Double Fine’s future, and an unsafe working environment for a lot of people at DF.

“…TBH seeing some of the names on that list is incredibly heartbreaking…I’m going to retreat now and hopefully pull some of the knives out of my back.”

What the hell is wrong with some people? What a stupid fucking statement.

Wonder if she was making more than the negotiated rate

Sounds like this one senior, ineligible, employee that is ruining everything for everyone needs to go. If you fear the possibility that others may gain the same privileges you enjoy, you don’t belong in any social setting

The one anti-union employee who got the most mention in the article was eligible, unless I read that wrong. This whole initiative seemed to have many problems, whether you were pro- or anti-union. On Bluesky, the author summarized her article as:

reported on something that was really difficult for a lot of people for a lot of different reasons in a lot of different ways

Some people feel very emotional about their workplace and fear that a change like this will ruin what they cherish the most. I think, in this case, the efforts were ruined by the company set up which made so many people not clearly eligible. The organizers were too conservative trying to avoid retaliation and only deal with individual cases...

  • this left the whole thing exposed to detractors who could freely engage and complain publicly, becoming the only visible voice
  • people who were not eligible felt betrayed or fear of being left out
  • people who were eligible may fear for the colleagues left out

I think the organizers should've considered going "all in" and just consider either they form it or their job is done. In the end that was pretty much the result.

Very interesting read though, thanks for sharing.
