Odd issues that seemingly appeared out of nowhere

3 days ago by KairuByte to c/3dprinting

After some issues started with an old hot end I can only chalk up to extreme clogging, I nabbed a new hot end, ran through calibration, and was met with odd issues I’ve never experienced before.

Certain layers on certain sections are acting like there has been extreme under extrusion, and gap fill is virtually non existent. Walls also don’t seem to be printing close enough to actually touch and results in what seems like paper thin layers next to each other.

This is on an Adventurer 5M, and we have tried another hot end in case the first one we bought had issues of its own.

I’ve tried increasing (through calibration in orca slicer) the flow rate and pressure advance. Both appear to be correctly calibrated. The base of this print is 100% infill and during print I saw nothing to suggest over/under flow.

At this point I’m wondering if the extruder motor is dying, but I am at a loss on how to test that, as most suggestions seem to be “rule everything else out.”

This is meant to be a very fat gap fill, however as you can see the result is essentially just a thin line of material between the two outer walls:

These are also meant to be gap filled, as well as 100% infill, and this section looks like under flow which makes no sense to me when the base printed perfectly:

Hm did you maybe change the material of your nozzle? I have experienced something similar when I changed to a different material Komposition of my nozzle. After checking with a thermal cam it showed a pretty big change in temperature, because the new nozzle was losing heat faster.

Further this could also happen due to distance between the heater and the thermobullet or because the cable or bullet was fried.

To check if you extrusion motor is dying, you could take some really cheap filament and pace out how much material is being pulled when you command the printer to extrude say 20 cm. For that mark 20 cm from your extrude intake up the filament. If you do this a couple of times you could see if there is a different amount of extrusion, if your extrusion is what you printer is expecting and if you have a problem there.

Oh good thought. The material didn’t change, and we’ve ensured the humidity is correct, but it could potentially be a bad batch of filament. I’ll give that a quick run with something small to check.

Edit: Sadly an old partial batch of filament that didn’t previously have this issue does now, so it’s likely not a filament issue.

I’ll see about giving the extruded a test.

I had similar issues when the filament driving gears were worn out on one side due to abrasion

Could be an issue with flow rate, is the issues are in areas with higher volumetric flow as shown in the slicer you might need to slow down your printing or increase your extrusion temperature for those areas.

What’s the volumetric flow for sections that show under-extrusion vs. sections that print as expected?

Check your printing area and spool holder. Make sure there isn't anything that could be touching the spool over time or if it's sticking on the holder.

Any little thing like that can cause filament to get held up just enough to look like a clog.
