A Diver Volunteered to Clean Up Trash From a Wisconsin Lake. He Discovered a 1,000-Year-Old Dugout Canoe at the Bottom Instead

Now, experts with the Wisconsin Historical Society have determined that the vessel is a roughly 1,000-year-old dugout canoe, likely handcrafted and used by Indigenous communities in the late 10th or early 11th century.
Likely? What's the alternative? Milled on a steam-powered machine with a template by German immigrants, because you never can be really sure with these things?
It may be literal hand carving they are referring to, like using some kind of axe or other tool.
I think there is another method where you just keep dumping coals on a log and it slowly burns away what you wanted hollowed out. Technically that is still hand crafted, but not so much hand use.
"Instead"? You mean the lake was pristine otherwise?
Yeah that's a badly worded headline, he was finishing up a dive session on a group volunteer day so I'm sure he'd already cleaned up some trash.
The canoe will stay where it is, however.

Yeah, that’s not very typical. I’d like to make that point.
