While studying in Australia, he found online resources promoting terrorism. Boo. We didn't provide an environment that led him to try and murder a whole lot of people, we provided internet access for him to use to radicalise himself

Australian ISPs track every website etc you visit.

So, this dude should have been known to spooks and cops and what not.

That's a little inaccurate. What ISPs log is the IP addresses your IP address interact with and on what port. So, upon visiting www.jihad.com just now, some server somewhere logged the fact that my IP connected to 103.224.182.244 on port 443. Looking up the IP 103.224.182.244 on my name server takes me to the destination:
"lb-182-244.above.com".

In IT parlance, "lb" usually stands for Load Balancer, though I have no way to know whether that's what it really stands for in this instance. The ISP can't log the actual page(s) I visited, that's encrypted traffic. There are probably several websites behind that load balancer, and my ISP won't even know which I visited.

For huge sites like Netflix, Google, Hotmail etc, everyone will know the IPs will belong to those sites, so they'll know you visited Facebook for two hours between time-a and time-b. They can give this information to someone like ASIO or the Police who are then able to go look on Facebook to see what you were doing at that time (Your ISP can't).

It wouldn't matter if we are allied to Israel or not

Australia would be a target of Muslim extremist imperialism anyway because we have a secular democracy

Please consider this: we have lost more Australian lives because of the war-mongering decisions of our secular democratic empire allies (by a humongous proportion) than because of extreme Islamism targeting Australia. Most Muslims, like most everyone else, want to live in peace and be free of intervention from Judaeo-Christian imperialism.

I don't think he said we did. His point was about being a target for what we are. The fact that we (Aussies and gov) seem happy to walk into war to get cheap oil goes along the notion of us putting a target on our back.
