I was thinking about that one - too close for comfort that a literal portal to hell is opened in my lifetime. And you know it'll be some nutjob tech bro with a lunatic theism and all of our money.
If the show is any indication, I have little hope of getting past 12 monkeys:(
What is the range of each of these bars supposed to represent? It seems that the right end of each bar aligns with the year that the movie takes place, but what is the left end of each bar? It would make sense for the left end to be the year that the movie actually aired, but that does not seem to actually be the case.
the splitting line is "current year" so the left is "years before now"
I found the original, from 2009. The horizontal white line is "current year", so 2009. And yeah, the left of each bar is indeed the year the film released, the right is when the film's story took place.

Futuristic Movie Timeline
#6 In A Series Of Pop-Cultural Charts
No one really pays much attention to what year sci-fi movies take place. I thought it would be interesting to arrange some classic films about the future into chronological order and see what we’d find. I’ve also charted the years in which they were released as well as the current year. This is by far the geekiest thing I’ve ever done.
* I only included movies in which Wikipedia knew the exact year.

Nah, Idiocracy has been SoP since 2016. 🙁
Will one or the other? I doubt it. While burgers are the easiest of the fast food to prepare at home, I don't see the burger places going anywhere.
Between the two of them? The original subject of Demolition Man was Taco Bell, but test audiences said that not everywhere had Taco Bell, so they swapped the joke to Pizza Hut in some markets. Honestly it should have been KFC (the other Yum Brands company) for Japan because they love KFC over there, especially on Christmas.
The idea of "the cheapest* fast food place takes over and now every restaurant is Taco Bell" was mildly amusing, but the more you thought about it, the less sense it made. And by cheapest I mean Taco Bell was the cheapest fast food place in the 90s when that movie came out. Their food was generally cheaper and generally more filling. And you could get more of it for less. But did anybody ever seriously think Taco Bell would put burger places out of business? Not very likely.
The period in which Metropolis is set has been interpreted in various ways. In the preface to the 1925 novel, Thea von Harbou states that the story takes place "at no particular place or time, neither in the present nor in the future."[27] The 1963 American edition published by Ace Books,[28] with a foreword by Forrest J Ackerman,[29] placed the action in "The World of 2026 A.D.",[28] roughly a century after the film was made. This date was subsequently repeated in later sources on the film.[30] Giorgio Moroder's 1984 re-scored version likewise included a title card giving the year as 2026.[31] Film historians Lotte Eisner and Paul M. Jensen instead placed the events around the year 2000.[32][33] However, the film itself does not specify any year.[30]

The closer we get, the more plausible event horizon is, both in time and technology.
