I think their recent skirmishes with China are probably more pressing in their minds.

China is right there and, unlike the US, doesn't cooperate militarily, is often at odds with Japan, and the two have a bit of a history, you might say.

If you think the US will cooperate well militariily under their current administration...lol. Nothing that has been done has shown the US will reign in the orange fuher. He's just being let run rampant till project 2025 gets more done.

Seriously there are minimal guardrails beyond project 2025 goals cause they're the ones in charge (Russel Vought? Or something in charge of budget crap basically shadow president).

So while China may have their own goals they're just tickling yam tit's balls to make things simpler for them. They see they're going to e/surpass the US and are excited, play the long game (good for strategy if you can for sure). I'd prefer the stability they offer over the fucking every day crazyness of the US leadership shouting from an old senile man.

I'm actually Canadian and just want to be left out of it all. But global economy and all...yay?

There are incursions around disputed islands and issues between the Chinese and Japan Coast Guard not infrequently. This is definitely more in the minds of people here. Most are not particularly concerned with what the US does in their own borders and I've met a number of Japanese who actively like trump. I don't, but what I think living here doesn't really matter.

They can't give the honest answer until they're no longer reliant on the US for military protection.

The sooner they rip that bandaid off the better. It's messed up considering US protection is what kept Japan's imperial ambitions in check for decades. It's become abundantly clear that American military protection may not be guaranteed depending on its current president and ongoing logistical challenges, however.

They've been working on it for a decade or so, but it's a slow process. Even the EU trying to arm itself to replace the US is slow, and they're not nearly as economically stagnant as Japan is right now.

That's shockingly low.

I'd love to see that number over the last 100 years, and why it's decreased so much since the 40s
