I've said it before, and I'll say it again: Raw milk is fine in theory. Improper storage isn't.

Unless you live on or near a dairy farm, you should probably stay away from it, especially if payment is expected.

Source: grew up on day fresh raw milk and after I moved out, milk never tasted as good.

And just to clarify: there are two ways of properly storing raw milk:

  • In an actively cooled tank with automatic stirring. Said tank is emptied an cleaned with acidic and caustic agents every day
  • In a healthy cow

I worked on a dairy farm. No way I would ever drink unpasteurized milk after the things I've seen.

Storage doesn't even matter that much, the cows will lie in their own shit. Even if their udders are cleaned properly, and believe me they aren't, some of that shit will end up in the milk. Cows will develop mastitis which is usually a bacterial infection inside their udders. For the first few hours of the infection the milk can look normal but it will be full of bacteria and those bacteria will end up in the milk tank.

Sure the milk tank is cleaned and chilled but some bacteria will still develop at those lower temperatures, just slower. And once you take the milk out of the tank, even a few degrees of temperature difference make the bacteria multiply exponentially faster.

Finally, even with all these things said the milk will be safe for consumption if it is boiled or pasteurized. That will sterilize it. But these raw milk idiots don't do that, they drink it as is, not even boiling it. Some adults may be fine since their immune system will handle the bacterial load, maybe they'll get some upset stomach or diarrhea. But these morons are feeding it to their children.

It's NOT fine. Cow utters are covered in shit from walking in fields. If ANY of that gets in the milk, the whole batch is contaminated.

That's why you fucking clean them. You've never seen a cow being milked, have you?

I have seen it in gallon jugs at the grocery store and it scares me. They have a ton of signage about how it’s fresh from the farm and is only good for 3 days but that still seems too long.
