Saying that humans are innately highly social and tribal seems like saying you love music but only like 1 genre

Nah, even introverts need freinds. I mostly only have introvert freinds and they all recede into deep mental health spirals when isolating because "they like being alone". Yes, some people do feel like they benifit from alone time, but a lot of the time it is not super great for them overall. Though you can still respect what they "like".

And of course this is not 100% blanketly true, I am sure some are genuinely fine being alone, but all the data we have points to the reality that humans are not built to live like that.

I'm not really talking about needing friends. I'm talking about how it's counterintuitive to say something is highly social but that they also remain within cliques and show aggression or hostility to other groups they don't get along with. Like saying you're a very social person but you only get along with people in your neighbourhood.

I mean, aggression and hostility are social interactions, aren't they? I've never really considered "social" to specifically mean "friendly." As far as I understand, any time 2 or more people don't just completely ignore one another would be an example of some sort of social interaction.

How do you define the term "antisocial" especially in the context of Antisocial personality disorder?

Antisocial people are specifically antagonistic to the concept of society - they want to prevent interactions between people. It wouldn't be accurate to call someone who only hates one person or a group of people "antisocial," because they aren't antagonistic to the concept of community as a whole, and so "hatred" in general isn't what defines being "antisocial." Asocial people are a bit simpler, only wanting to avoid interactions between themselves and others, and not caring about whether or not other people interact with one another.

The cliques prove they're highly social.

And most people socialize across mtiole groups.

FFS, look at the number of nightclubs in ONE city.

Lemme propose a situation. There is a person who sticks to their group of friends and doesn't have the same attitude towards others. There is another person, who is warm and welcoming to anyone they can communicate in one way or another with.

Which one is highly social. And then expand on the first person. What if their limit is not their friend group. It's their neighbourhood, or their city, or their state, or their country. At what point do they cross the line between being slightly social, pretty social, and highly social?

Both. Sociality is not in comparison to an idealised 'pro-social' (as in seeking to empower or 'improve' society) individual. It is in comparison to other animals, like lions, which form social groups almost exclusively based on familial ties, or bears, which usually don't come together except to mate, or salmon, which technically group up to spawn but are not forming social connections or even pair bonds.

Oh, yea, then I totally get what you're saying. Though I would still say we are definately a social animal type. Just a shortsighted and stupid one.

Would you settle on "we are innately social but lack foresight"?

Yea, that is satisfactory.

I mean... that indeed has been the traditional state of sapiens, which arguably went back long before us.

In the modern sense though we can still be both, as well moving in more than one circle or liking more than one general type of people. Sociality as a muscle instead of a survival skill, one might say.

Which, notably, is how most people describe their music tastes as well.

A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.

Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:

Rules

  1. All posts must be showerthoughts
  2. The entire showerthought must be in the title
  3. No politics
    • If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as "capitalism" and "communism". If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
    • A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
  4. Posts must be original/unique
  5. Adhere to Lemmy's Code of Conduct and the TOS

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.

Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.
