A Cray-1 supercomputer replica from 30 "obsolete" Mac Minis

The Cray-1 team hopes to fill the currently empty second half of the tower through a crowdfunding campaign to secure 70–80 additional M4 Mac Minis. The goal: create a cluster capable of ranking on the TOP500 supercomputers list.
70-80 M4 Mac mini’s? In this economy? These go for around 1 thousand dollars each at the moment.
This article talks about MacOS’ support for “MPI”. I have a few MacBooks sitting in a drawer from different eras. Is there something interesting I can do with them? Something less research and more selfhosting-y?
Possibly, I’m not sure how well old MacBooks dissipate heat without the top being open.
Aside from that, get a Ethernet adapter and installing Linux is the place to start. 🙂
Ummmm. The point is to use MacOS’ version of MPI which this article talks about.
That said, yeah those are Intel Macs. Would do well with Linux.
What is being self-hosting? I haven’t seen MPI used outside of software running on a compute cluster.
One of the points of the cluster was to celebrate Apple’s founding, and the bundled MPI library just let them run an existing workload without switching the OS to Linux.

This is so cool. The MacMini really is a great, little form factor.
Interesting decision to take off the bottom of the case. I wonder if that was for cool or hardware access.
