Armored assaults aren’t dead. Robots got the credit, but it was Ukrainian infantry in armored trucks that reversed a year of Russian gains near Lyman

Robots cleared the mines and blew up the bunkers, but soldiers still had to ride in and hold the ground.

Russia spent 18 months building its salient toward Sloviansk; Ukraine took much of it back in three. By 30 September, three of four planned phases in, the operation had returned 176 sq km to Ukrainian control, taken 250 Russian prisoners, and cost Russia more than 5,000 killed and wounded, Ukraine's presidential office said. It also foiled a Russian plan to break into the rear of the Sloviansk-Kramatorsk urban area, the office said.

Defying critics who insisted vehicles couldn't possibly survive in the drone-patrolled gray zone, the 3rd Army Corps repeatedly deployed mechanized forces as it counterattacked across a roughly 100 sq km salient the Russian 20th and 25th Combined Arms Armies had extended toward Sloviansk, one of the last two big free cities in Donetsk Oblast.

Maneuvering for months under a veil of secrecy, the 3rd Army Corps found and exploited gaps along the flanks of the 20th and 25th CAAs, ultimately breaking into the Russian armies' rears and forcing them to pull back across the Zherebets River in order to avoid encirclement.

Well that’s relief. I was worried that we lost yet another way of killing one another.

If you understood war you would understand this is a relief, this isn't about celebrating killing it is about dispelling the myths that russian momentum is inevitable and that drones are some radical discontinuous departure from the principle in war that what is valuable are the humans not the machines.

Seems it’s about reassuring us that those assaults are still a thing.

It's a counter offensive to stop a slow pincher encircling their strongest defensive positions.

Rules:

  1. No sympathy with the enemy or its collaborators. Russian and North Korean soldiers are fascists committing a genocide. Remember that.

  2. Objective and factual reporting from the battlefield, parliaments, etc. is encouraged, even if it's about bad news for Ukraine.

  3. Insulting Putin and his cronies (Orban, Trump, Musk,...) is absolutely fine but don't use homophobic or similar language against them. Members of the queer community don't deserve to be compared to that scum. Also: Putin disciminates against gay people. If you do as well, you're part of the problem.

  4. Don't insult or use overly harsh language against other commentators.

  5. Don't submit direct links to Twitter/X and Truth Social posts. You may: Post a screenshot + quote, do a full quote and name the author, direct link to a proxy service like ThreadReaderApp.com or Nitter, deep link an image embedded in a tweet because Lemmy will cache a copy.

  6. Don't just complain about paywalls. If you encounter one, be a sport and link to an archived version instead. Use Firefox + Cookie AutoDelete + uBlock Origin with the annoyances filters enabled and https://filterlists.com/... to avoid encountering many in the first place.
