Instead, it became clear that Microsoft will respect user choice only when it is forced to. It is important to think about what that means for a company whose operating system runs on more than a billion machines. Microsoft’s standard for respecting people’s choices is legal compliance. Not what’s best for its users. Not its own published principles. Not what’s technically feasible. Not even what it already does for users in Europe.

Hard to care given that Windows PCs are a small minority of Internet users. It's like 8 mobile for every 1 desktop.

There are 1.5B iPhone users. That's about the same as Windows users. Meanwhile iphones don't even allow an alternative browser. On the iPhone Apple only allows a reskined Safari for Firefox.

They allow other engines in the EU now, although it has to go through an approval process and there's a bunch of requirements. https://developer.apple.com/...

Of course, because it's Apple, they're doing the bare minimum to comply with the law. Because the EU is the only jurisdiction that requires this, alternative browser apps have to be geogated so that only people in the EU can install them.
