Victorian Labor withdraws attack on RAFFWU ahead of election

The Victorian Labor government, led by Premier Ben Carroll, has quietly withdrawn a controversial bill ahead of the November election, which would have banned the Retail and Fast Food Workers Union and some regional trades halls. Zane Alcorn reports.

This bit is an interesting point that I haven't seen elsewhere:

Green Left has been told that regional trades and labour councils had let Labor know about their concerns that the bill could be used against them, since many operate as incorporated associations and play an industrial relations role.

As last week's Disputes Report mentioned, it could always come back after the election:

RAFFWU - Ben Carroll

In some good news, Ben Carroll’s attempt to pass the Associations Incorporation Reform Amendment Bill 2026 has failed. The Bill would have allowed Consumer Affairs Victoria to wind up any association formed for “industrial purposes” in Victoria unless the organisation is registered under the Fair Work Act - eg RAFFWU. That said, it possibly only failed because they ran out of time to push it through the Legislative Council. So perhaps not dead, buried and cremated, but in a coma. Certainly one to keep an eye on, as politicians of all sorts could see fit to revive this sort of legislation - either at a state or federal level. In case you missed it, I did write an article about the proposed Bill at the time.

Hopefully they've actually given up and they're not just retooling it or hoping for a more favourable crossbench.

Unfortunately, doubtful :(

Seems par for the course for the Labor party
