Climate Change Pushed Earth to Its Limits in 2026 as Certain "Vital Signs" Reach Record Extremes, Report Says

21 hours ago by Beep to c/climate

The seventh edition of an annual report analyzing Earth’s "planetary vital signs” indicates that Earth systems are rapidly destabilizing, some at an accelerating rate.  The report, published today in BioScience, analyzed 16 of these signs, including greenhouse gas emissions levels, ocean heat content and acidity, the mass of major ice sheets, the number of hot days, Earth's surface temperature, and more.

I foresee a distinct lack of fucks available at the highest levels of government. Nothing will continue to happen.

With perhaps one exception: that minority part of the ruling class that does believe in climate catastrophe might dig another level in their bunker.

Still, encouraging trends exist as well, mainly the rapid expansion of renewable energy capacity and battery storage. In 2025, for example, renewable energy surpassed coal in global electricity generation...

Yeah we're building out renewables like crazy but it's not resulting in greenhouse gas emissions reductions, because while renewables are meeting nearly all new demand, they're not replacing existing demand. So despite the fact that electricity generation from renewables is expected to increase about another 50% between 2025 and 2030, greenhouse gas emissions from electricity generation are expected to remain flat over the same period. Electricity emissions aren't going up, but they're not going down, either.

Discussion of climate, how it is changing, activism around that, the politics, and the energy systems change we need in order to stabilize things.

As a starting point, the burning of fossil fuels, and to a lesser extent deforestation and release of methane are responsible for the warming in recent decades: Graph of temperature as observed with significant warming, and simulated without added greenhouse gases and other anthropogentic changes, which shows no significant warming

How much each change to the atmosphere has warmed the world: IPCC AR6 Figure 2 - Thee bar charts: first chart: how much each gas has warmed the world. About 1C of total warming. Second chart: about 1.5C of total warming from well-mixed greenhouse gases, offset by 0.4C of cooling from aerosols and negligible influence from changes to solar output, volcanoes, and internal variability. Third chart: about 1.25C of warming from CO2, 0.5C from methane, and a bunch more in small quantities from other gases. About 0.5C of cooling with large error bars from SO2.

Recommended actions to cut greenhouse gas emissions in the near future:

Anti-science, inactivism, and unsupported conspiracy theories are not ok here.
