White dwarfs are white, but some are green, pink or vivid blue

a day ago by Rimu to c/space_astronomy

A team of astronomers led by University of Warwick’s Dr. Mark Hollands has converted white dwarf spectra into the colors a human eye would perceive.

“It turns out these incredibly dense stars can produce colors nobody expected, and some of them genuinely surprised me.”

Okay yeah, let me convert this to other colours and then be surprised they're other colours.

For clarity: I'm not clowning on the research, just the phrasing here. The conversion of the colour map is a really good way to engage an extra part of your brain that's not active when just looking at numbers alone.

Ah, so it's not just a Red Dwarf plot twist.
