Linus Torvalds Turns to AI to Untangle Obscure Kernel Code, Surfaces Bugs Lurking Since 2013

a day ago by cm0002 to c/linux

Linus Torvalds used LLM tools to clarify obscure assoc_array code after a bug report from Nils Ollrogge. The resulting readable functions, tested in user space, confirmed the original issue and exposed three more defects dating to the library's 2013 debut. The fixes highlight a pragmatic approach to maintaining complex legacy kernel components.

Good use of the tool, love to see it

This dude hates secure kernels running on his machine.

Ah... its impossible to write and or harden a kernel without Slop now?

They've been trying for 30 years. Now that bad guys have access to semantic knowledge retrieval systems, the good guus will fall behind if they dont use it as well.

I don't think that they've been just trying but also being quite successful with it. But still, its one thing to get the knowledge of a bug and then develop a solution, then test it and then integrate it and not like Linus did: vibe coded a solution, didn't test it, hand it off, goes on vacation others discover easily race conditions in the slop solution. AND THEN he lashes out that peeps, like me, are NOT OKAY with Slop in the most essential part of Linux and 90% of the entire server landscape in the fricking world.
