BTW, when I initially got on the Fediverse I thought in terms of a centralized network where the most users means the most activity. Not the case here, you have access to everything from any instance (barring defederation). So you want an instance with the best ping from your locale, preferred admin settings, and best performance. A lower user count might be a good thing if it means less server load and better performance.
