weirdness - Mod team members reordered randomly?

just wondering if anyone else is seeing this, and possibly a bug related to the upgrade?

I just noticed that in the communities that I started, mod team memberships got reordered randomly and I no longer have the option to add/appoint new mods. Examples: !butterflywings@lemmynsfw.com , [!dangleandjingle@lemmynsfw.com

Update: hmm, even in this mod coordination, the membership is all changed, and @ubiquitatious@lemmynsfw.com is no longer top moderator...

More weirdness update Monday: at !DangleAndJingle, I just added @lemmyposter212@lemmy.world as mod. But in the sidebar, s/he is listed out of order and not reflective of modlog transactions...

what?! first mod is always the top mod. there must be some bug or something. @wankbank@lemmynsfw.com can you approve this? I can see this in modlog so I will transfer the community to the @b9999998@lemmynsfw.com , but I just want to here from wankbank too.

This bug seems be randomly spread:

-- in !eroticphoto@lemmynsfw.com - See comments in post https://lemmynsfw.com/post/103279 - both of us mods lost the ability to appoint new mods.

-- On quick glance elsewhere at other communities I'm not involved with, I see the mods team order flipped at !sissies@lemmynsfw.com , !sissycaptions@lemmynsfw.com, impacting @StrongSuspect4913@lemmynsfw.com

That's because @lemmyposter212@lemmy.world created some of the communities and some I did create. We are both mods over on reddit as well, so we split the communities we created initially

I transfered the community back to you but it still in same order.

So even when you as an admin does "transfer" the community back to me, it doesn't fix anything since I'm still not top mod and I don't have top mod capabilities. Thanks for trying though

This is one crazy "bug"! And shows a real weakness in how the mod lists are maintained within Lemmy. Any idea what actually happened? Obviously the "bug" bypassed the database mod transaction logging. Does this possibly mean there are some holes open for future hacking vulnerabilities where maybe even admins can be possibly circumvented?

Perhaps the only way to really correct might be if the actual current top mod @wankbank@lemmynsfw.com does the "transfer" back to me. Let's see if going that route will work, as I have about close to 10 communities that are impacted.

This seems to be a major problem, I don't think they will be able to restore the previous top mods even if they roll out an update to fix this issue. Link to github issue

Yes, it's a major problem - I was surprised not many folks seemed to care about it at all.

I don't know the code, but since the modlog itself is not corrupted, some admin fix/script to restore the original mods' ordering should be possible by leveraging modlogs.

What I'm seeing in !lipsthatgrip is that I appear as top mod and I do have the options for "ban from community" and "appoint as mod" (or "remove as mod" and "transfer community" for you), but they're not in the drop-down and actually can get out of sync with it if you collapse the menu by clicking on the background:

I don't see you moving the community back to me, but I am late to this thread.

The same is true of the two you linked, and I also see myself at the fist listed mod for them (even in a guest session).

!lipsthatgrip@lemmynsfw.com is unaffected and totally fine, which confirms what you see. You are the creator of that community so the ordering is correct.

The issue is on the communities I created such as !butterflywings@lemmynsfw.com, !dangleandjingle@lemmynsfw.com - due to the bug we are discussing, you've become the top moderator... (what we don't know is why it happened). And it's not simply just a display UI issue.
BTW, I don't really mind that you've become top mod on my various communities, it's more that this type of random re-orderings is a very serious thing IMO - if one can't trust consistency and integrity of how moderators lists are handled, then the platform in my eyes become not trustworthy at all...

Yeah, I understood your position completely, and it's definitely a P1 bug.

Notice that the moderator's user ids are ordered - I think it's just making the earliest registered (i.e. lowest id) account the top mod... @yay

Experimenting in !modcoord shows that I cannot de-mod anyone with a lower user id, but I can de-mod e.g. @ubiquitatious@lemmynsfw.com who I assume is the original owner.

I'm guessing the intended behaviour is that you shouldn't be able to edit a mod who's been mod longer than you, but they're sorting/checking the wrong thing.

@yay@lemmynsfw.com This instance appears to be ordering mods by user_id, not by date_granted_mod (or whatever).

I've just tested on ds9.lemmy.ml and it's not happening there so it might be just a here thing. I need to do paid work now, so I can't test on any live communities to confirm that it is only here.
