People should stop looking back.

Let's do our own thing on Lemmy and stop looking back.

I think they mostly crushed the protest and that only a minority of redditors will move and that's fine.

I still hope the reddit IPO will be a failure so that it shows it's not a good thing to alienate even a small part of your userbase.

Until recently we didn't have an alternative. We do now, and it's everything that was good about Reddit, with none of the ads or authoritarian management. Plus, it's new and evolving - we can shape it to be what we want, not what the CEO wants.

Slashdot, Orkut and Digg haven't become irrelevant overnight. However, in the retrospect we should be able to see that 1st July 2023 became Reddit's Digg moment. Perhaps not as clear and fast, but the rate of decline now accelerates. Check back there yearly, and it should have become obvious.

The only reason reddit didn't have their digg moment in 2017 or so when they came up with "new reddit" was because a: they kept the option for old reddit and 2: on mobile everyone used better apps anyway.

I agree. My first Lemmy account is now three years old and my accounts on all the alternative sites are even older. I really hope they kill old.reddit.com this year, it would really motivate even more people to migrate away and the infrastructure would be more ready for them.

It's going to be facebooked, all the sophisticated users will leave for other platforms leaving nothing but loud meme reposts, some sanitized view of politics ("I know this is going to be controversial, but I actually think cancer is BAD!!!"), and some flavor of safe nsfw.

Honestly, it lasted way longer than I ever expected, even if it got really blonkey halfway through, lots of knee-jerk contrarian takes for the sake of contrarianism ("Actually, I think cancer serves an important role, and you're an idiot for not seeing it!!!").

I mean. I’m not there anymore, so that’s 1 less daily user. I left the tiny sub I moderated on private too so that’s one less (albeit tiny) sub. They can force it out of private mode if they wish, remove me as moderator, whatever. It doesn’t matter to me, I’m not there anymore. I don’t feel crushed, do you?
