I also saw a petition to the HoC on this topic. I laughed. Sponsored by Jamil Jivani I think. Like, are you opposed to frivolous wasting of parliamentary time or not? Pretty mixed messaging there.

NDP MPs are few in number, but they bring forward bills and sponsor petitions at a pretty high rate.

The advert is literally just Reagan's voice from an address he gave against tariffs along with stock video of people and places. That's it.

Totally support that, and it's a great time for it as Canada's under threat and many Canadians are boycotting US media products.

Personally, since cutting off US media and switching to CBC, I've really enjoyed a lot of Canadian content and I've found myself more appreciative and interested in Canadian cultural products overall.

This was a profound speech. There was a lot to it. Declaring the death of the liberal international order with less than shining obit being one example. That was a very powerful statement. More than that though, he has been gradually laying down pieces of a framework for working back towards a world order we might want to see. Can we do it without the US smashing it all up first? Very uncertain. Still, can't fault Carney for taking the position he has. He's supposed to be a leader, it's a time when leadership is desperately needed, and he is stepping up as a leader.

Have people forgotten another wanted criminal getting 50+ standing ovations in Congress not long ago? On a scale of how America honours war criminals, a red carpet in Alaska seems relatively minor in comparison.

What the surgeon did was obviously wrong, but a Nazi making homemade pipe bombs is still by far the bigger concern in this story.

I don't always agree with Gilmore, but I really respect and see value in the work she does on exposing white nationalist networks in Canada and raising awareness about the risks they pose, and she's especially brave doing it as an independent journalist.

Nobody should be shocked by that at all, and yet we won't even criticize them. They can be targeting and killing UN peacekeepers, engaging in ethnic cleansing, seizing territory that doesn't belong to them, and participating in starting a war of aggression that now threatens the world economy, and we won't even name them as doing anything wrong. It is truly pathetic and despicable from our government. The entire world can see what Israel's doing, but apparently not our government.

Appeasement is not going to work with this guy. It's time for some allies, like Europe, to finally show some backbone and align against the US in a unified front to push back against this. If he can keep picking on one nation at a time while their allies all capitulate to avoid being targeted, everyone will suffer much worse in the end.

So, the valedictorian was a good student and learned the lessons of history and the values that we would hope for her to learn. Good for her.

I would have been very disappointed to have a principal under me make a choice like that during my career.

The student should receive a public apology from the principal and be allowed to finish her school year with dignity alongside her classmates.

The responses of Western leaders broadly have just been trash, not including Sanchez. Anyone can just look at what's coming out of the US and see how dangerous it is. They're literally calling it a holy war against Islam in their military, with Secretary of War who has a crusader's cross tattoo and who has said they don't care about any laws of war and will take no quarter. The president has said it's his great honor to kill Iranians, he's talking about Somalians in his own country as genetically deficient and low-IQ, he's saying he can just take Cuba and do what he wants with it, and so much more. Then there's Israel, with everything that's happened in Gaza and the West Bank and now members of government talking about taking not just Southern Lebanon, but all of Lebanon and even threatening Turkey next.

It's screamingly obvious what we're dealing with, but Western leaders provide access to their bases to support the war, provide diplomatic support, keep arms supplies flowing, and won't speak out against the obvious and obscene statements and actions.

What tf did our grandparents fight for in WW2?

Men must really have weak hands, feet, eyes, and skulls compared to women, and be much harder to see. Sounds rough.

Just the F-35s? The entire defense industry is about swindling public money. That's why they spend hundreds of millions per year on lobbying and political influence in the US.

I expect this to negatively impact passenger-to-passenger relations. The sense of courtesy towards others that might have governed many situations where a reclining seat would make the person behind less comfortable or inconvenienced will turn to "I paid for it, so it's my right."

I want those in Gaza to get all the support they can to survive this and I'm glad for them to get something rather than nothing from Canada, but I also see this as primarily just performative face-saving from Canada. We aren't doing anything like as much as we could to apply pressure. Instead, we're taking minor actions that won't actually apply much pressure or change the course of Israeli plans while making us look humane. It's government trying to relieve a bit of public pressure and maintain international image while not doing anything to really rock the boat.
