And the api didn’t expose ads. It’s not like the apps chose not to display them. It wasn’t even an option.
@kbin.social
This here is the Volt family.
Marty volt is small and so he can jump across a small stream. Put up a small net and it’s impossible for him
Victor, though. He’s got some strong legs. He can jump the net and the stream.
In fact, he’s so strong he can jump over a small river but not if you put a small wall across the way. Then, even with a running jump, he’ll be blocked.
And finally there’s Kal, ahem, Clark Volt. He’s super strong. So strong it could be an ocean and with a little jaunt before leaping he’d jump it.
The stronger the volt, the further they can go and the bigger the obstacle you need to make it impossible for them to make it.
So high enough voltage can literally leap through air (that’s the arcing you see in power plants shorting or lightning) or even wood itself. Even rubber, with a high enough voltage, will be conductive since the sheer force of the current will find a path for the charge.
That’s also why we have lighting rods, it’s easier to redirect the current to a safe spot made to handle it than to try and make high skyscrapers out of a material that can resist the insane charges of lightning and still be strong enough and light enough to build with.
The books are great. Show does a good job moving the intrigue and conflicts to a screen but man if Avasarala and Amos aren’t the absolute best portrayal of those characters.
Avasarala has a heart of gold and a fist of iron in equal measures.
This means she’ll do horrible things (even at her own expense) for what she believes is right and she doesn’t put up with any kind of nonsense.
And yet she plays the political game so well all while pretending she’s above it.
And the Shohreh Aghdashloo knocks the character out of the park. Every move and word both foul and sweet personifies the character in the book that it’s impossible to convey how absolutely masterful the performance is.
And Wes Chatham as Amos is a close second. A man whose moral code is simple because he’s broken, knows it, and so he defaults to “who is the most likely good person I can use as a guide.” Chatham portrays the violence is necessary like doing the laundry.
Turns it on, does the job, goes back as if nothing happened. Oh, I should do this instead? You got it boss.
Or how he conveys in the simple things how Amos feels there is a moral right but having grown up as he did it’s hard to know what that is and who has the authority to enforce it it just chefs kiss
What? Stop beating this guy? Ok. Sorry fella, buy you a drink?
And instead of making it closed they made it available under open source licensing. With the only terms being attribution.
They’re not the bad guy here. Nor is Ernest. There’s no bad guys here just a mistake, a call to fix it, a fix and an acceptance of that fix.
Really Ernest showed the perfect example of “if you have to eat crow eat it while it’s young and tender”
Although, by nature of the federation, anything add and then deleted may already be replicated to other instances.
Some of whom could instead show/retain a copy of it.
Basically assume that everything will be available and associated with you forever. Even more so than usual.
Just for starters (knowing that they can be changed with themes) is color contrast
For example up top whether I have subscribed, all, etc selected isn’t clearly obvious.
I mean I can “tell” if I look really closely but there isn’t enough contrast.
There’s some great SASS tooling for identifying if the colors you have meet the recommended WCAG guidance for contrast/visibility.
Alt text and descriptions for items visual elements too.
While it’s hard to enforce across the fediverse I do like how I’ve seen some people post memes and write descriptive text of what is in the panels.
Here’s one I commented on.
Not to mention that we can “visualize” the segments and networks by the numbers. Makes it easier to recognize, as an analogy,
This state, that city, this road, that house.
Versus ipv6. Of course there’s so much space in v6 that it isn’t an issue except it’s such a pain to work with for people who tend to think in ipv4 octets and bit masks
As others have said… a mascot.
But, what would be great in my opinion would be the current folder icon shape stylized like a birds wings.
E.g. flying free amongst the various places of the fediverse
True but they can go anytime. In the meantime they’re making a fuss, keeping the issue alive in the news and making Reddit take action instead of making it easy for them.
E.g. “If you want me gone fire me because I’m not quitting so you can save face.”
Boost as a “shout out” being public is alright. I guess for us Reddit folks it’s like a cross post to our own u/sub that followers could see.
Upvote/downvote, though, should be private. Not sure if that’s ever truly possible though because by the nature of the fediverse it has to be replicated across to other instances and so everything is “open” as I understand it.
It may not be easily visible in the UI but it’s there in the data.
So I try to think of everything here like it’s a postcard not a letter.
Any mail carrier who sees it (and makes a copy) can see it all.
I see that ActivityPub makes it hard to do it and if it can’t be done then it should be visible (so people can know and act accordingly)
The only “alternative” approach I can see would be to have a per instance account that is given the activity (say upvote/downvote)
So… let’s say I’m on kbin.social and upvote this comment.
Kbin.social knowing me (since it’s my account) logs the upvote but does so as if single_instance_system_account@kbin.social did the upvote.
That is then what is replicated across the fediverse.
I assume that breaks the “intent” of the protocol and could be an issue but does let other instances decide to filter out that activity (if they decide to do so) by having some attribute or flag that denotes that this “account” is the fediverse instance account (e.g. not a user).
Boosts, however, should be shared since it’s like a retweet/shout out and are meant to be shared.
Of course that means I can no longer see my own upvote/downvote activity.
If that was also wanted then you could add a table that basically logs that but isn’t federated. E.g. a local instance reference that can be used for that instance to show the activity.
This way there’s less chance of an issue of somebody knowing a users account seeing activity like this:
A man, say in Iran, upvoted something about the prophet that somebody else found disrespectful
A christian teen upvoted something about atheism.
A woman reading about how to leave a domestic abuse situation.
Somebody curious about transgender reassignment
Either there needs to be a way to minimize the risks of such activity being seen/shared across the fediverse or it needs to be very very clear that even if you don’t see it that what you do is shouted across the fediverse and that others can and will be able to see it.
Ahh. So what would be helpful then, for smaller communities that started here not knowing there was one someplace else would be to add some kind of post that points to the specific community.
As we’re still learning as we go here
For anybody doing this seriously be careful. High salt/protein and low water sounds like a recipe for all kinds of issues.
For example extremely high water low salts can cause brain swelling and death.
They could be. Or they could be sales, or brand ad coordination, or hr, or legal handling the various issues related to products, lawsuits, regulations, actual law enforcement inquiries, etc.
Like any corporation there’s a ton of backend staff doing stuff people don’t see because it makes the parts they do see operate.
