I've never seen a software freedom or open-source enthusiast make anything remotely like this argument. When we have criticisms of predominantly open-source-based companies, it's usually because they're adding some kind of proprietary scamware into their systems, not because they're charging money for their services.

Plenty of people and companies have found ways to generate income - yes, even beyond donations - while still respecting other's rights. You're just repeating a lie that's been debunked and dead for years.

Dude, wireless latency is well documented. Every controller has at least some latency, and if yours is to a problematic degree, that's a you issue. As I said before, I don't have issues with my controllers.

If you agree with the basic view that any software that does not respect your rights to use, study, copy, modify, and redistribute it, is a form of unjust power over you - then that principle becomes a convenient acid test for virtually all computer technology. Any tech that enables and enhances those rights is not a grift. Any tech that restricts those rights is a grift.

Of course there are edge-cases. Blockchain stuff is usually open-source, and yet it's a tool that has been designed by and for the most extreme right-wing libertarian types, so while the underlying technologies could hypothetically be used for good, the forms that they're implemented in are pretty clearly a grift. So intention and design matter too.

I'd also like to see how the Hyppocratic License shapes software over time.

Would also love to see more developments in Farm Hack, Appropriate Technology, and Open Source Ecology.

On lemmy, downvotes are as much a badge of honor as upvotes. Chase the controversy! That's what the design incentivizes.

Trying to switch was your problem. Linux is not like Windows or Apple. There's no marketing department trying to manipulate any brand loyalty. It's just a tool, and one that has been developed organically to fit in your life as much as you want it. Unlike Windows, Linux does not try to take over your whole computer, it can easily coexist with other systems in a variety of ways whether dual-booting, vms, or live distros.

I like to keep a distro on a usb stick ready wherever I go, in case I ever have to use somebody else's computer, for instance.

Once accustomed to using an operating system that's actually trustworthy, any time spent with the other big two feels like being violated. Windows is best kept minimized and quarantined.

Wait, are you saying you have to run scripts to make hdmi default... on Steam Deck? Cause I have the thing in desktop mode, and every time I turn it on while it's plugged into my tv, it automatically defaults to that tv no problem. What's going on with your setup?

Also wireless latency is a problem everywhere, with some controllers being better than others. Gulikit ES Pro works pretty well in my experience, but wired is always going to be faster.

The last straw with consoles for me was when they all started charging money regularly just to play online multiplayer games.

My Steam Deck makes for a better console-like experience than any of the major consoles, and more. I have zero interest in going back to Sony or especially Nintendo's scams.

I have one old laptop with Windows 10 sitting around, and only because it's the only way to update the Xbox Series controller I have that randomly bootloops and thus is essentially useless anyway.

So this begs the question: how much of Windows can I delete and replace with foss stuff, while still having it technically be a Windows OS?

Soon:

"I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Windows, is in fact, GNU/Windows/NT, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Windows plus NT. Windows is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another nonfree component of a fully functioning free GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX... and whatever NT does."

I don't understand why everyone wants to jump ship to a whole new browser, when the governance of a browser is the real issue to solve regardless of which browser is supported. A good stewardship model has to be established by people of integrity, technical skill, and funding. From there forking making a hard fork of Firefox is way cheaper and easier than trying to invest in one that's not even finished.

Self-checkout or not, minimum wage is not even remotely enough to expect cashiers to be anti-theft enforcement.

Snap should be reason enough that everyone should abandon Ubuntu, especially when Mint is right there. The last thing we need is to make Linux more like Android+Google Play.

So for people criticising with rain, wind, snow, and groceries - none of these are nearly the issues you think they are, and there are a wide variety of bike configurations and gear that address these challenges.

The real issue is having to share the road with cars. I've just had too many close calls, and the growth of self-driving vehicles makes me more nervous to be on the road than ever.

Because of cars I hate being on the road whether in a car or on a bike, and every car that passes by automatically makes me tense up these days. I hope a new Carrington event makes all of them useless.

Bullet heaven is likely what will stick. If you don't like that it's also the name of a game, consider that metroidvania contains the name of two games.
