Ngl, us r/efugees are not happy with things over there.

As much as I'm coming to enjoy this, it still isn't what reddit was, nor is the app experience anything close to as feature rich. But, I'm finding other benefits here that are, and never were, possible at reddit, so it's still a good thing :)

Reddit is proof that no publicly traded company, nor any that intends to be, can be trusted with anything. Not use that was ever in doubt, but reddit has shown it in such a glaring, grotesque way that it's the poster child for how shitty corporate thought is.

I dunno. I was enjoying things. I had started moderating two subs I deeply cared about, with one having a strong sense of community building. There's an emotional response to the loss of that. But I'll be damned if I'm going to put in the work, put in the passion, when it's shit on by the very company that profits from my free labor. fuck spez, fuck reddit

Heh. You should have seen the post I did to recruit replacement mods.

But, seriously? A lot of these are copy/pastes. Word for word. And they're all somehow massively upvoted beyond anything else where they occur.

Like, on the edc sub, an amazing comment might have a thousand upvotes. Some of these "fake" comments had triple or more than that. And, insert surprise face almost none of them had any history in the sub. They'd never commented, never posted, didn't have the sub in their "commonly used" header.

I suspect a combination of active fuckery on an admin level, active fuckery by user groups using sock puppets, and a tiny fragment of actually upset users. I can directly say that admins ignored the fuck out of the one thing I sent them a report on, which was a death threat. Said it didn't violate reddit rules. K.

We already know that greedypigboy engages in fuckery like editing shit, and that he's actively seeking to root out anyone objecting to his fuckery. So, yeah, I 100% believe he's actively working on some part of this too.

As an example of why there's some group coordinating shit, the prevalence of "coward" in these copy/pasted rants is unusual. For one thing, it doesn't fit the actual events, so it points to a deep misunderstanding of the word coward. Then, it gets used so frequently that it boggles the mind that so many people have the same misunderstanding. This points to a small group of idiots running a campaign issuing sock puppets.

Since a decent number of the comments like this looked the same as the typical bot account, with a few months of use, but minimal activity outside of complaints, I'm not sure if I believe any of them are individual users expressing themselves. Those comments have a different feel to them than the copy/paste ones.

Eh, if it were easier to block an instance as a user, I'd be 100% with you instead of 95%.

There are instances that are batshit crazy. Since blocking an instance as a user just ain't possible yet, I can see why defederation before trouble gets going is useful. Once the nasty side of the internet gets snowballing, it's much harder to manage.

Troll, or serious extremist, some things are just cancerous.

Reddit still pulls things to r/all, even if what's there is some abandoned sub. It's why some subs went restricted instead of private, so they can make posts about the protest and the issue behind it that will still be surfaced.

A lot of newer users don't bother going past r/all, so there's going to be some activity constantly since not everyone knows what's going on.

Hell, I made three posts about it all on r/edc, and I'm still getting people asking why they can't post. I'm not moderating during the two day blackout at all, but I get the notifications.

Which is fine. The protest has never been about getting people to stop using reddit. It's about the moderators standing up and making the point that it's the users and mods that made reddit worth anything to begin with. And it was. Reddit side? The admins that handled day to day activity helped a ton when they could, but reddit beyond that was just servers and software. Without content, that's useless.

FWIW, that's someone directly saying that their goal is to go out and proselytize.

I took r/edc restricted yesterday, though we are/were tiny. While I still plan to find replacement mods from within the community after reddit goes full dipshit, I'm done ring their work for free, with shit tools, next to zero support, and (worse, imo) taking a lot of flak from admins because of bullshit unrelated to moderation.

I dunno if lemmy is going to become the reddit replacement or not, but I'm done with giving reddit anything at all. Overwrote and deleted everything from my author account that had some decent amount of fiction, and my personal account that had a lot of real stories from my life. That ain't much, but since I've seen my stuff being read on YouTube, and reposted by the copy/paste bots, it's something I guess.

Nothing so far.

The automod post I have set up at r/edc links to the sopuli.xyz/c/edc version.

At r/knives, we have both the lemmy and squabbles versions linked.

Neither myself, or the mods I comoderate with at the knives sub have faced any issues. This could change, but as long as you aren't spamming the hell out of it, they aren't coming after mods, or users doing it here and there.

There was the new sub, r/lemmymigration, that got pulled down then reinstated after backlash though, and the person running that got banned for a bit. There's also been reports of anti-protest mods requesting, and getting, senior mods removed in their favor. All of which is bullshit that merits huffman getting kicked in the nads, but it was expected.

Just wait until we r/efugees get used to it and start being more active.

Oh, and if anyone converts one of the bigger reddit apps to lemmy usage, it'll bump things again because not everyone knows jerboa exists.

Don't forget that reddit has the ability to astroturf themselves. Some of those are sock puppets. Others are a coordinated effort by accounts that have never used the subs they're bitching on before.

Check the user history of some of those. They fit the standard bot pattern

Jerboa is the only actively developed option on Android right now.

That being said, a web wrapper like hermit is nice enough as an interim pick, if jerboa isn't doing it for you.

This is kinda tangential, but this is what happens when you don't have dedicated mods with robust tools.

As much as reddit hated mods, and despite there being shitty mods, without moderation, things fall apart because people suck.

When mods suck too, you have to hope admins don't. When admins suck, you're screwed.

They're protesting, yes. Or were the last I was there.

But that's going to be a hard thing to duplicate. None of the options for hosting such a thing has the automod and related capabilities that make that sub as smooth as it is. The mods there are pretty much the best on reddit, but they need the right tools to do it. Mod tools are very limited on lemmy, and not much better developed on the standard sites.

Every time I see something like this, I'm reminded of the bathroom scene from fight Club. The listing more than the do not fuck with us part.

Not in the Dick swinging sense of it, but that hunting down and targeting the very people you rely on to function cannot end well.

Reddit has cops and criminals, doctors and fighters, manual labor and execs. Not everyone is going to resist, but the cross section of humanity that does is everywhere.

Spez should actually be very glad that project mayhem isn't a real thing. He could end up with his nuts sent press release style to a couple of news outlets. He's the fucking poster boy for the anti capitalist hate brigade at this point.

I dunno, why does everyone blow their nose on a kleenex?

Lego is eponymous for plastic building blocks. If you call the forum anything else, you aren't going to be recognizable and easy to find.

I mean, hell, there's people that don't even know there's actual brands other than lego at all

Why do these always exist before the internet? We can order bullion online now. It's almost midnight in a fairly rural area

But yeah, I know a guy that will sell certain things for cash that normally require legal hurdles. But if you show up, cash in hand, he'll backdate things on his end. One phone call, I could buy out his stock in fifteen minutes because I'm a regular customer he trusts. He's usually got a few hundred thousand of goods in place.

Barring that, I'm kinda screwed at this time of night.

I know a couple of farmers that would let me buy livestock in cash like this, but that's only going to be a few thousand bucks.

I know a weed dealer that would be able to give me a few pounds if he's got it in, but I would have to call and ask how much he has.

Do services count? If so, I've got an idea for a cheat lol. Hire my wife for a back rub.

So, I just took a second and sent a text to an acquaintance and explained the scenario. Turns out you can buy a car in an hour or less. It's just a matter of paperwork to make the sale official. So, if you know a car dealer, and they have enough on their lot, you could easily get rid of most of that million in time. Most of the time wasted isn't really necessary. If the dealer and the buyer are already on the same page with the price, you could get as many cars as you have time to sign for.

It's all about fucking with them. Yeah, they can pull the plug at any time. But the longer it drags out, and the more of their own rules they have to change/break along the way, the worse position they end up in.

Fuck spez, don't make it easy. Make them play the heavy. Make them do it in a way they can't pretend is justified.
