I've commented more here than I did the past 9 years on Reddit. I also created Watch Party, where people can watch a movie together and discuss it in a live thread, similar to sporting events. Starship Troopers was the proof of concept, and it was a fun time. I'm hoping it'll gain some more traction in the coming months and encourage anyone to check out the pinned "Getting Started" post if you're interested in hosting a watch party as well.

This is one of my favorite communities on Lemmy, I'd never seen the Strange Planet comics before, they're all fantastic.

Hey, I just want to say thanks for posting this. I'm just a random internet stranger, but I'm happy for you. I think Fred Rogers sums it up best, he is the epitome of kindness to me.

It's you I like,

It's not the things you wear,

It's not the way you do your hair

But it's you I like

The way you are right now,

The way down deep inside you

Not the things that hide you,

Not your toys

They're just beside you.

But it's you I like

Every part of you.

Your skin, your eyes, your feelings

Whether old or new.

I hope that you'll remember

Even when you're feeling blue

That it's you I like,

It's you yourself

It's you.

It's you I like.

It's crazy he (technically) starred in the top two movies at the box office at the time, Fast X and GotG 3.

Buy into your home instance instead by setting up a recurring monthly donation. It's doesn't have to be a lot, some have tiers as low as $1. Alternatively, you could donate to the Lemmy dev team, or some of the devs that are creating these spiffy apps we're using on our phones.

lemm.ee has always been solid for me. At this point, I'm debating whether to just make it my primary instance instead.

I almost made the rash, uninformed decision to close up shop on lemmy.world and move my community to another instance. Luckily I did some further reading, and yeah, unless whatever other instance I jumped ship to was also patched I would have just been wasting my time since this is a vulnerability in the Lemmy code and affects all instances until the admins apply a bandaid/the code is fixed.

Same, I migrated from Plex to Jellyfin about a year ago. It's just as solid without any of the bloat, local authentication just in case the internet goes down, and transcoding isn't locked behind a membership.

Thanks for the post @canthidium! My main purpose for starting this community is to drive user engagement and discussion on Lemmy. Discord would work just fine for discussing a movie in real time, but I don't want to gatekeep that discussion behind Discord for those that don't use or want that application. Lemmy is the discussion platform we all have in common. Streaming the movie on Discord is just an option that's available to the host (or another watch party member) for the benefit of those that don't have access to a copy of the movie, but would still like to watch and join in on the discussion.

TL;DR Discord is just a means to an end of driving engagement and discussion on Lemmy.

Today I've started a recurring $5/month donation to lemmy.world. Scaling up infrastructure to meet demand is expensive, and they need as much help as they can get to offset their costs. I'll most likely bump it up to $10 a month if the software continues to improve the UX and performance. I encourage everyone that has the means to, to even make a one time small donation to your local instance (if possible), as these first couple months will be critical in the growth and sustainability of this federated community.
