This is literally me. A friend of mine recently mentioned that they thought about installing Linux and I was instantly like "Please let me come over and install Linux with you" ;)

I find it incredible, how uncharitable some of these comments here are. As an open source contributor myself, I also really don't like the fact, that my work just gets stolen and profited of by big companies without my permission.

Even the nicest, most idealist engineer still needs to be able to live from his work. I am not saying he is, but he is completely within his right to protect his work from abuse.

Free software shouldn't mean, that every company can use our code in any way, they like and open source licenses still have terms, for example copyleft licenses, like GPLv3, still require work, which is based on that code to be licensed with the same terms and appropriately credited. AI companies are clearly not abiding by these terms and aren't really prosecuted for that.

We should be angry at the companies misusing our work instead of open source devs who have had enough.

Ladybird is pretty much dead to me, firstly because the dev has some really bad right wing vibes (he said gender inclusive language is too political for his docs and retweeted a Nazi on Twitter). And secondly because the started using AI to move the code to Rust to make it more secure, which is insane if you know anything about AI or security.

My current hope is in servo, because they have much more capable maintainers and the project seems to make some good progress. Also they have daily builds on their website for every operating system, so you can already try it out easily (but don't expect everything to work right now, they still need some time).

I think your comparison to slavery is a bit overblown and minimizes the tragedy of actual slavery. But I agree with the sentiment.

That's not true at all. There are still a lot of great indie games if you look behind the curtain a little bit.

Don't be so pessimistic, because that will truly ruin gaming. Just support indie devs, that are still committed to making great games in a human way. And believe me, there are still a lot of them out there.

It's not about anyone getting paid, it's about affording basic respect and empathy to people and their work. Using AI sends a certain message of 'I don't care about your consent or opinion towards me using your art", and I don't think, that this is a good thing for anyone.

Yeah, but I don't think, that was the point of the meme. It was just about making fun of tankies.

That looks amazing!

I don't want to bother you about that or anything, but Microsoft (who owns GitHub) is a company that's actively hostile towards open source devs and is actively using GitHub to scrape insane amounts of training data for their own AI models without regard for consent.

Have you considered moving to an alternative platform? Codeberg for example is quite good, all their code is open source and self hostable and the interface is quite easy to understand for someone, who is used to GitHub. It's also managed by a nonprofit and it's pretty easy to transfer you repo from GitHub to there.

How is Windows (which costs money) cheaper than Linux (which is free)?

Honestly, I am pretty happy as a woke person.

The trick is to watch less news and do more things to actually change anything.

I don't really think she is trying to do the right thing. She was Trumps biggest ally for YEARS while he did some of the worst things, you could think of and she most likely knew about the Epstein stuff way before this and actively covered it up. She doesn't believe in anything except her own power.

I think, the reason she is doing this is because she recognized that Trump is a sinking ship and she is trying to take advantage of that for her own gain. Maybey she wants to run for president in the future or at least be the loyal companion of one. If she were to continue defending Trump for everything his admin does, she would sink with him, so she tries to get out.

I think the real alternatives are Peertube or Owncast, because they are non commercially and FOSS and can be self hosted and federated.

In the long run, every commercial platform that has enough users will enshittify, that's just capitalism. That's why we have to break the cycle and reject corporate social media.

I think people in uni are more left wing, because education and understanding the world almost necessarily makes you more left wing.

But pot also helps, true ;)

Codeberg seems to be the best alternative to Github right now. It's fully FOSS and supported by a nonprofit and it's getting more and more popular.

So if you want a good alternative to GitHub but still people to be able to see and contribute to your code, I would suggest Codeberg.

You can definitely change the world, have you ever heard of history? It's full of revolutions, the french revolution, the civil rights movement, the workers rights movement / unions. How do you think, we achieved this relatively good living standard in the last 50 years?

Shure, changing the world will be hard as fuck and it could be years until you see any positive change from your behaviour, maybe your actions will only bear fruit after you died.

But the only thing we can / we have to do is try.

And attitudes like yours are exactly what fascists are counting on.

If you don't want to do anything and just stick your head into the sand, I can't stop you, I guess, but stop pretending you didn't have a choice.
