My [paranoid] take: its vaporware designed to distract from the reddit fiasco, with plans fo mr meta to later absorb reddit instead of a reddit IPO. Reddit users are very different than Twitter users; the mass exodus didn’t happfrom Twitter to Mastodon, but looks very promising from reddit to lemmy/kbin. And it takes only one social media giant to crumble for the rest to follow. Once people are on Fediverse there is no going back

As a reddit refugee it feels great to see Lemmy grow, and even better when you’re on the winning instance!! :)

Huh! Didnt know Lemmy would put me as the poster and remove any trace of original OP when cross-posting! That's not great! Anyway OP for this is @Zeerooth

Yes memmy is great. The dev is updating it almost 2-3 times a day to get it working! There was another one (mlem?) but last i heard there was some disagreements between the dev and community and it was pulled with plans for it to be continued by someone else. I never tested it (beta was full) so not sure if it was better or worse than memmy. All I know is I am typing this from Memmy and couldn’t be happier with it.

I realize you are asking books and not necessarily audiobooks but for audiobooks I follow a few good narrators that I know only do books I will like. This way I am almost always guaranteed a good book, and as a bonus I already know the narration quality will be perfect.

Fair points. Mentioning lemmy.world was just a little bit of “instance pride”! But my main argument is that the majority of people currently coming to lemmy seem to be tech savvy and/or have already been on fediverse. And leaving the rest of the users behind wont work. Many of the greatest contributors to reddit had non-tech specialties that were valuable for commenting on specific topics (eg law, medicine, civil engineering, etc.). I have been wondering how we can show these people that lemmy is not as terrifyingly complex as they make it sound to be.

I agree that its very confusing especially since thats the “default” top community recommended when posting, and has the same name as the entire instance so sounds like its a general discussion community when in fact its reserved for admin announcements. But at the same time I think everyone (including @Ruud and others) are on a learning curve so i don’t think you should take it personally. We’ll all figure things out soon :)

Lemming (verb): the act of doing lemmy Lemm-on (noun): having erected lemmy. So only instance owners can be called lemmons. The correct term for the rest of us is: Lemmer (noun): someone who does lemmy

True but reddit couldn’t get a video player to work for a decade and it was fine 😂 Joking aside though, I think it goes both ways. Lemmy and others have had so many improvements in a matter of days because of necessity. (Eg the iOS app gets 1-2 updates a day, something that didn’t even exist a couple of weeks ago). So the more people join the faster the updates are and the better the services will be. So I do think active recruitment of people who are less tech savvy is to everyone’s benefit in the end. Advertising may be a stupid idea but I’m wondering what else we can do besides word of mouth (especially those of us who don’t have the know-how to participate in the actual dev process)

Exactly! But i don’t think word of mouth is enough. Also i think timing matters too; right now there are a lot of people potentially looking for options, but if you google “reddit alternatives” it brings upnonsense articles about how lemmy is not ready yet etc
