There things are both a result of the part of the American body politic that espoused an obnoxiously individualistic idea of "freedom". Because some jerks don't want to pay taxes or care about other people, they argue against government things that help people -- like regulating food and encouraging healthy diets for those with means, or giving the hungry food or money to buy food.

There isn't a good argument for it, just a bad-faith argument made by mean adults who don't mind children starving or adults dying early.

If trump pulls out and leaves Israel to fight alone, we'll actually see change in Israels government

Be aware that the change will likely be going from an old genocidal facist to a younger more-genocidal facist.

If we had a comoetent administration we'd know what we do when Israel deploys a nuclear weapon and Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq, Qatar, and Lebanon all either produce their own or delcaring deploying one locally the deciding factor of their allyship.

As it is, I think the effective plan is "fumble and cave" as Russia and China snap up every proxy they can.

A good part of the right-wing anti-muslim bigots in our country blame the kingdom of Saudi Arabia for what a criminal group led by a (distant) cousin of the king did.

Most Americans were 13 or younger when 9/11 happened, and only know what their parents, schools, and friends said.

From the outside, it looks like there are at least three levels of actor.

  1. Everyone starts as a "nobody" -- no credits, no SAG card, and no agent. Most films hire a bunch of these folk to act as living backgrounds or "extras", but now and again they'll give a nobody a role and they'll move on to the next step.
  2. "Credited actors" are those who have credits and agents and whatnot, but still need to audition and may very well work a separate job for when they don't get cast enough to pay the bills.
  3. Very successful actors eventually reach a point where they stop auditioning, and are instead reached out to directly with script ideas and roles essentially written with them in mind.

The distinctions between the second and third groups are very soft and will change with the speed of fashion and rumor, while the gap between the first and the other two is so dramatic that I'm sure someone out there doesn't even consider extras to be actors.

"OMG, they believe it when they say gender is just a performance and they will respect reported identity no matter how badly you pass!"

Was he expecting to be mocked like a white man in blackface? Only something like 25% of trans women are on HRT; the rest make do with clothing and makeup and being deeply closeted.

If you want to lie that's on you. We're just accountable for our own actions, and it'd be better to believe a thousand transphobic tourists than misgender one t-folk stepping out for the first time.

Parenthood has taught me that anyone who thinks they don't want kids should absolutely be free to follow that and not have kids.

It's also taught me that all of the cringe goofball nonsense is 100% sincere. Being a parent changes the human brain in weird ways. Which is good, because babies need someone to clean them up after they puke on themselves and shit their plants so hard it gets in their hair.

(Parenthood can be considered a necessary mental illness.)

The idea that a pedestrian walking anywhere but on a limited access highway would ever be at fault for a collision with an automobile is a direct result of century-old propaganda by the moral equivalent of the NRA.

If i made a self-propelled battering ram with remote controlled steering I would rightly be held to strict liabily if anyone was hurt. But if we put a a chair in the same thing and call it a "vehicle", suddenly the rules change in our favor.

I like cars and driving, and can easily imagine a number of mitigating circumstances that would shift liability away from the driver, but the presumption that once-walkable city streets are for cars is the result of fierce industrial lobbying and not a reasoned public policy process.

Hakeem Jeffries and Chuck Schumer are doing incalculable damage to Democratic party unity by not enforcing their party's candidate for NYC mayor.

It doesn't even matter at this point if Mamdami loses -- any call by either "leader" for party unity will be met with "you didn't endorse Mamdami, why should we endorse your pick" by anyone to their left, forever.

"if we just made this opt-in" has become the bleakest nonsense in IT.

Be it LLMs or ads or "free" albums, tech companies just can't accept that "make me say yes" should always be the default.

Denying any one of a prisoner's rights is the first step to denying all of a prisoner's rights.

If not the right to his religious text, then why the right to be visited by a priest? If not a priest, then why his family? And if not family, then why a lawyer -- and if not a lawyer, then why even bother with a trial?

Hey, let me try re-writing that headline:

"Republican senator interjects transphobia into a hearing about banning abortion ; OBGYN refuses to misgender her trans masculine patients."

Men can absolutely get pregnant. Because trans men can get pregnant, and trans men are at least as much men as bigoted transphobia like Hawley.

I'm very relieved to hear it was only water and apple cider vinegar. "Unknown liquid sprayed by an attacker" is just short of actually wounding someone when it comes to anxiety induced.

MN should throw the book at him. And at anyone who helped him do it.

You're assuming that the dramatically segmented and stratified experience is the "exact same service", which is patently not true.

There's a world of difference between a black officer who managed a supply line, a white non-comp who maintained aircraft, and a queer rifeman who witnessed half his unit die to an IED. And that's ignoring rape, gang infiltration, religions discrimination, and plain ol "was your CO a jerk or awesome?"

The Republican party chose not to impeach him when he sent a mob to stop a pro forma session.

The Federalist supreme Court declared him immune for prosecution for whatever shit he does in the white house, and exempt from punishment for what he does outside it.

Fucker didn't declare himself above the law. He just finally realized what his traitorous party has been saying for years.

If you were in a jury box and were shown just this message and a note about how he was fired two months later for "not being a team player" you'd infer the intent and vote to hold the company liable for wrongful termination.

Corpospeak keeps a "work through lunch" message from being a self-evident labor law violation even if no adverse action occurrrd. They don't disguise intent if those later bad actions occur
