A guy in our data center couldn't figure out who owned a particular machine that he needed to work on. So his solution to figure it out was to let them come to him. He went and pulled out the network cable and waited. He was escorted out a little while later. The moral of the story is don't go disabling production machines on purpose.

Guys, here's the real reason. So they can positively identify you. Evidently this is how much that knowledge is worth. They can probably then start selling your posted data to other companies that have also "verified" you via Persona and Stripe. Once those datasets start getting linked together, well I will let your imagination run with that.

Long time ago, but by far the worst for me was when I inherited some code that a previous programmer had done. Every variable was a breakfast item. So if biscuit>bacon then scrambledeggs=10. Shit like that. It was a nightmare and luckily I only had to deal with it infrequently.

Depends. Everyone claims they are on social media platforms to stay in touch with family and friends. I know no one on here and am fine with the anonymity. So it's up to you if you count this.

I guess it depends on where you work. This was a large datacenter for a very large health insurance company. They made it a point later that day to remind people that it was a fireable offense to mess with production machines like that on purpose. And evidently the service he disabled was critical enough that it didn't take long for the hammer to come down. There were plenty of ways to find out who owned the machine, he just chose the easiest and got fired on the spot for it.

So much technology these days seems to be just rolled out without any real world testing done.

I swear I read a thread here (on lemmy) recently that one of these subtitle sites was embedding ads in the subtitles. Now that takes things even further than scummier in my opinion, especially since subtitles are for availability.
