I think people (me included) have a very poor sense of what apps are worth.

$20 for an app you use nearly every day for years is unthinkable.

$20 for a single decent meal at a restaurant is fine.

Seems odd to me that anyone should think $20 spent on an excellent app is too much.

I did takeout at a Dominos the other day, and it took the idiot a full minute to figure out how to bring my order up on the computer. He's tap, tap, tapping away at the computer with no idea what he's doing. Probably high as hell. And then he's like, "It's going to ask you a question", and I was actually angry that it even gave me the option. WTF! And I still felt slightly guilty for hitting "no tip". Fuck tipping!

There's nothing about the content being federated that makes it hard or impossible to index. Each instance is just a website with a public webpage that a bot can read. That all a search engine needs to index it. The worst case scenario is the bot will find the same content on multiple instances.

I did read that the website is loaded entirely through JavaScript and that maybe the Google bot doesn't execute JavaScript so can't see the text. I don't know if that's still a problem in 2023, though.

This article says it's not a problem, but I didn't read past the tl;dr, so maybe there's a caveat. Like maybe it has to use a popular framework like React or something to work.

I'm glad you're telling me it's a joke. I don't like it when things are taken out of context and some post is basically asking me to form an opinion on someone.

You don't. Go to a different instance and sign up. Then stopping using this account.

It literally blows my mind that people seem to think otherwise. Especially since the admins hosting an instance are basically running a charity. If you don't want to be on an instance that occasionally defederates from ones that defend hate speech, then go find a different instance, or start your own.

An hour ago I would have sworn it was $16.99. I had to edit a bunch of comments where I told people the price.

Spend an hour over there. That what I just did. It's a public website. Look at the front page. It's all alt-right, transphobic, antivax posts. All of it. I saw at least 8 posts celebrating the SCOTUS ruling to end to affirmative action in higher education. That's an interesting topic to discuss, but holy shit did they make it seem like a "white victory" party.

Notice I didn't say Nazi. People use that term colloquially to mean bigots and white nationalists. Don't get hung up on people calling other people Nazis.

I want to defederate them specifically because they are Trump-supporting, alt-right bigots. Not because they're "Nazis".

The admin married a black girl, and he had gay friends growing up, so he's clearly not a bigot, right? And yet when poked, he spat out an enormous list of the most tired Fox News talking points like blaming Biden for gas prices and anti-trans fearmongering. There were so many. Nonsense that's easily debunked. He's overly concerned with "sexual perversion", and he's just the kind of person I would never want to hang out with.

And he runs the whole place! What "concrete examples" do you need? Do you really think bigotry is going to get downvoted over there?

(For the record, I'm not a Biden supporter. I'm just pointing out you can't blame a US president for a global price increase.)

Their admins are bad apples, though. Are you hoping they will ban themselves from the instance? Have you even looked at their instance and see who is saying what?

I was kind of hoping hate filled communities wouldn't be a thing on Lemmy. Sadly, everything's the same everywhere you go.

Clarification: I think NFTs are really stupid. I would even say I hate them. But I don't need a community based around hating something. No one should.

This was simply the first example of a "hate" community I've seen on Lemmy, so I spoke up.

Are you implying that content creators don't themselves want more views and subscribers? Of course they do!

"They only use thumbnails and titles that get views and subscribers because if they don't... they won't get views and subscribers since Google isn't pushing their content."

That's what it sounds like you're saying.

Are you certain they care about weed? Maybe they're only looking for narcotics or meth. Especially since you're in a legal state.

Ask them to delay the test for two weeks after your hire. That way they don't waste the money testing when you'll know you'll fail for weed. Be upfront about it. Tell them that you quit as soon as you were hired and that weed isn't a big deal to you. You just smoked it with friends once in a while.

Not every company is a total asshole about weed. In the end they are real humans. They already hired you, and don't want to waste that time doing so. As long as you don't make them waste money on a test, they'll probably be happy you could test clean two weeks later.

Maybe I'm too optimistic.
