Independent thinker valuing discussions grounded in reason, not emotions.

I say unpopular things but never something I know to be untrue. Always open to hear good-faith counter arguments. My goal is to engage in dialogue that seeks truth rather than scoring points.

Littering is one of those things I struggle the most to understand.

I can somewhat grasp it in extreme cases, like when you’re dealing with something really dirty and there’s nowhere to put it. But I’m talking about casual littering - things like throwing candy wrappers on the ground when you could just as easily put them in your pocket.

I don’t think anyone sees themselves as a bad person. Even when we engage in bad behavior, we usually have some story we tell ourselves to justify it. But I can’t put myself in the mindset of someone who casually throws trash on the ground for someone else to clean up. It’s kind of like walking around and cussing at random people - it just doesn’t make any sense. You have to know that you're the problem.

Speak for yourself. I've pooped three times before I'm even out of the house.

We've had definition for AGI for decades. It's a system that can do any cognitive task as well as a human can or better. Humans are "Generally Intelligent" replicate the same thing artificially and you've got AGI.

I did X and this happened!

Also, if the title of a news article is in the form of a question I just mutter to myself "no" and keep scrolling without even reading it.

Somehow they seem to think that one small cigarette butt is so insignificant that it doesn't matter despite the fact that they can see these small cigarette butts literally everywhere.

I can only guess what the context here is but to imply that "they're fine with kids getting raped" is almost definitely an extremely dishonest strawman of what they're actually trying to say. This type of bad-faith dunking on people you disagree with only makes them dig down their heels even deeper and, I'd argue, is only making things worse.

If I had to steelman their position without knowing full context, I'm assuming that what they're trying to say is that abortion shouldn't be legal just because of the comparatively small number of cases where it perhaps would be justified (incest/rape) because it opens the door to a huge number of what they see as unecessary abortions.

If one truly cares about changing minds rather than scoring worthless internet points then you need to take down the foundations - not break the windows. Breaking windows is fun and easy but it doesn't achieve anything. Listen to what people are saying and challenge their core beliefs.

I think one of the few things Lemmy is better at is that I can go into 8hr old thread with 120 replies and write a comment and then have people actually read that comment too and react to it.

With 99% of AskReddit threads for example, posting a reply was complete waste of time unless you were among the first ones in. Almost all of the top comments were always also among the first comments.

DaVinci Resolve is professional grade video editing software that's completely free to use. It lacks some features that the paid version has but this probably doesn't effect the vast majority of casual users.

I genuinely believe ACAB, and this news has me conflicted because my new friend seems really cool and super nice.

What you’re experiencing is cognitive dissonance. New information is clashing with your prior beliefs, leaving you with a choice: either update your beliefs or double down and lie to yourself even harder.

Idiocracy.

Birth rates are down everywhere and the majority of the people left making lots of babies are not the ones you wish would be having them. Being virtuous and on the "right side of history" means nothing if those values die with you and are not passed to the next generation.

So other than destroying your teeth, it sounds like the conclusion here is more or less that being overweight is unhealthy and overweight people tend to drink sugary drinks. It's just empty calories. If you're naturally lean despite drinking sugar-sweetened drinks then the negative health effects of it are probably significantly lower.

Personally, I just tend to consume mostly artificially sweetened drinks. It takes the edge off when I desire something sweet and to get any significant negative health effects from aspartamine you'd need to be consuming insane amounts of it.

As a Finn, I've often wondered about the same thing. In the summer the air is filled with mosquitos and in the winter it hurts your face and lungs yet some people were like "yep, we'll settle here"

They treated it as if it was not radio active only to find out the hard way later. Marie Curie is one example and the women with rotting jaws from painting watch faces with radium (licking the brush to get a sharp point) are another.

Going to the gym and eating healthy is a surefire way to look good and have a longer healthspan too but most people aren't doing that either. Why? Probably because it takes time and effort.

Also I'm not sure how many people have the patience to not touch the money once you get into tens or hundreds of thousands. I could pay off my house with my savings but I wont.
