Here's a copy/paste, sans hyperlinks:

Developer verification will be enforced on certified devices with Google Play Services installed, which is the majority of Android devices. There are options to bypass the restriction:

  • Use a free, uncensored Android system like /e/os, LineageOS, or GrapheneOS that does not preinstall Google Play Services.
  • "Degoogle" by removing Google Play Services. If it is a system app, you can uninstall it using ADB.
  • Install apps via ADB. Google has already confirmed that ADB will continue to work in the future. You can either use ADB from a PC as described below or use a wireless ADB based installer like anyapk.

That's black licorice for me. The stuff with licorice and anise in it. Everyone else hates it, I love the stuff.

Yep, been running it for a couple years at least? Mostly ZigBee and Zwave devices. For lights, some other powered devices, temperature control, and in-house location tracking.

It's not always intuitive, but always figure it out eventually. There's a homeassistant community at !homeassistant@lemmy.world which might be helpful if you have questions.

TL;DR: I don't daily drive (Free)BSD because it doesn't work with some hardware and software that I use.

I'm not an expert in the BSD's. But I've tried to daily drive FreeBSD a couple of times and can speak to it for myself from that viewpoint. Most recent attempt was about a year ago.

The issues I had:

Poor WiFi support. I understand that wireless driver support is iffy and even if it does work, it has poor speeds. I tried this on my laptop and could not get WiFi to work. There was a workaround in passing wireless card through to an alpine Linux guest VM and connecting there then creating a bridge. I did get this to work, but I found it impractical.

Games (via Wine/Proton) aren't really an option. I understand you can install steam via a Linux compatibility layer and it's somewhat functional with workarounds. I did not try this.

Those were dealbreakers for me. But the desktop experience itself was good. I ran KDE, and it felt the same to me. if I was running it on a wired machine that wasn't used for gaming, I think I'd be happy to use it.

Neither of those companies produced consoles when I was 8. But of the those, I only ever owned PlayStations (PS2, PS4). So, Me_irl too I guess?

Edit: Forgot I had a PS Vita too.

Mostly I agree. I have no kids and won't (vasectomy), and I'm a bit on the antinatalist side. Not so far in that I think people should never have kids. But reproducing at the rate we do is unsustainable and thus unethical. So there's a bias there.

I do think maternity and paternity leave should be given. And some grace should be allowed for small things. Like having to come in a little late or leave a little early for having to pick up/drop off kids, that kind of thing. To a point. If it's causing more than a minor burden to coworkers, then that's a problem.

But getting preference in scheduling, time off, etc? I don't agree with that. I shouldn't get the short end of the stick because they have a kid.

Edit: In reading some of the other comments, I saw a common sentiment which I'll sum up as "don't blame the parent, blame the system" which I can agree with.

I also had a "chose to breed" line in my last paragraph. I softened the language there, because it's not always a choice.

I'm accustomed to the imperial system. But agree that metric is better.

Some metric stuff I have no trouble with. I have a good spatial sense of the distance of a mm, m, and km. And can do a rough miles to km (and vice versa) conversion in my head. I have a good sense of how much a kg is and similarly can do a rough conversion to and from lbs in my head. But while I understand that a gram is 1/1000 of a kg, if handed a small object and asked to guess how many grams it is, I'd fail miserably.

Celsius I can't ever remember the conversion, but I've had enough exposure to it that I understand if it means cold/cool/warm/hot weather.

Reporting in with a hassle free printer like some other commenters.

I have a Canon monotone LaserJet MFP I bought at a big box store with no prior research like four or five years ago. Been great. Always just works.

"See, I'm not really an atheist but agnostic. It means I'm not to be expelled from this community as a heretic"

I identity with this. When I was younger I identified as agnostic, as I saw it as a more socially acceptable option than atheism which allowed me to not have to pretend to be religious.

But I've identified as atheist for many years now. In my case by the time I did, everyone of significance in my life was nonreligious.

You don't need an NVR. The camera supports a microSD card to store footage. It also supports FTP upload.

HomeAssistant isn't required. It is supported and I do have it configured.

I have next to no recollection of how UniFi works so I can't speak to that. Mine is connected to a 2.4GHz WiFi network. IIRC that's all it supports. Might be different with newer models.

It also supports HTTP(S)/RTMP/RTSP/ONVIF streaming. Though I tend to just use the app (and I'm particular about installing apps) as I find it quite usable.

I bought a Ubiquity router once because a friend was raving about it. It crapped out on me after maybe 6 months? Will never buy their hardware again.

I'm using a Reolink doorbell camera and am happy with it so far. Had it for about two years.

And MacOS is a BSD variant, so also Unix-like under the hood. So Microsoft is the only real black sheep in that ecosystem.

I'm in the United States. I honestly don't fully understand the nuances of it myself. When I applied for my passport I did so at a post office. But you got me curious so I did a quick search and looks like they can be at clerk's offices, libraries, city halls, courthouses. So depends on where you are I guess.

I landed on doing it this way because I found an online renewal option on https://www.usa.gov/passport which sounded convenient so I followed that process and after filling out the form it had me print it out and instructed me to mail the form, my current passport, and the processing fee. So I did.

It'll be my second time to the Philippines. First time in Hong Kong though.

I consider myself a fairly adventurous eater, as compared to most Americans anyway. But I admit balut is well outside my comfort zone.

I wouldn't mind getting a pulse on what traveling in China is like. I'll shoot you a message later!

Long time and still current hater of all things Apple here.

I have to use a locked down enterprise managed Windows 11 laptop for work. If given the choice of that or a locked down enterprise managed Mac, I'd switch in a heartbeat.
