This is a frustrating pposition to be in, particularly when few people are willing to offer viable alternatives in such threads.

I don't want to let a purity test be the reason I impulse switch to a less effective VPN, but don't want to indirectly fund things I don't support. Yes, money I spend on Mullvad might go towards shit I don't want, but what else is on par with Mullvad that doesn't have some other downside?

Gee sure would be nice if it weren't against the law to properly look into the software and reverse engineer it so that couldn't be a problem

If you've read this post or kept up with his blog occasionally the book treads familiar grounds. I sill think it's worth the read to have a condensed version.

Doctorow guides you through understanding the AI bubble by proving you don't need to know the technical jargon or latest developments. All you need to have as a guiding framework is "what technology (actually) does and who it does it to."

As mentioned in the imgur comments: "Flattening the underside of an engine head after it has been deformed by the heat and possibly has blown the gasket." A quite positive reliability effect in that a flat surface is a better gasket mating surface - means much less likely to have a gasket and overheating problem

It's not actually law and that's just what companies want to be the belief for them behaving reprehensibly

"Easy" if it goes through a predictable path directly in a short time period and nothing breaks. I've worked with plenty of advertisers and it's disgusting how poorly even very well funded companies get it to work.

Yes, I believe you're interpreting that page incorrectly. Fiduciary duties are law bindings for specific relationships and situations not applicable for all publicly traded companies to all shareholders.

I believe you're confusing that idea with the theory of shareholder supremacy that's a claim, popularized by the likes of Jack Welch to support their actions.

The background comes from Dodge v. Ford Motor Co. in 1919 which stated

There should be no confusion... A business corporation is organized and carried on primarily for the profit of the stockholders.

and the interpretation has been quite debated.
