What I find really interesting is that the MAGA type are literally incapable of defending Trump on his own merits, they always resort to some sort of logical fallacy that deflects, distracts, or misinterprets. It implies that they are in some degree aware that Trump is indefensible, but they defend him anyway because they're brain dead and their entire ethos is built around dishonesty.

Vietnam stopped being socialist a long time ago. They still retain the authoritarianism of Marxism, but not the socialist economy.

And that's supposed to change Cuba's objectively failed economy, how exactly? There's no way around it. Cuba's economy is a failure.

Putin will never stop being a war criminal until the day he dies. If he takes over all of Ukraine, he will move to Moldova then Georgia then Latvia then Estonia and so on.

The moment this war ends, the Russian Federation will collapse. People forget but Russia has collapsed twice in the last century by doing the same things it's doing now.

It collapsed the first time when the out of touch tyrannical Tsarist government dragged the country into a needless war (WWI) while the country was going through a crises. The country collapsed and formed the Soviet Union.

It collapsed a second time when the out of touch tyrannical communist government dragged the country into a needless war (Soviet invasion of Afghanistan) while the country was going through a crises. The country collapsed and formed the Russian Federation.

Now the same thing is happening. The country has an out touch tyrannical dictator that dragged the country into a needless war during a time of crises. Once the war is over the country will revolt and collapse once again.

Basically to me it's like this: If there's no evidence to convict Luigi then that means he's innocent, therefore, free him. If there's evidence to convict him then he's a hero, therefore, free him.

Nobody thinks this. Lemmy users need to stop being racist like this. Iranians are not stupid, these people have agency. They know what a war with the US means, they had two of their neighbors go through it. They know it's hell, but the thing is that the regime right now is so cartoonishly evil that if a war loosens their grip on power and opens up a real possibility for a new government, then it might just be worth it.

I'm Iraqi. My family lived through the terror of Saddam Hussein. The US invasion was hell. It destabilized the country and a lot of people died. Nobody recalls that time as a good one. Yet, at the same time, you'll be hard pressed to any Iraqi that wishes the US didn't depose of that evil regime.

See, I'm someone who can't stand Jimmy Kimmel. I find him both unfunny and very annoying as a person, and I never thought there would come a day where I would actually defend him vigorously, but here we are.

This is truly inexcusable. This is the most blatant violation of the first amendment possible. This is a clear cut example of the government coercing and colluding with corporations to censor a private citizen on a private show for comments that are perfectly legal. He was only censored because MAGA morons got triggered by a statement that's not even controversial. Even IF it was controversial, that's literally the whole point of free speech. It's to defend offensive, controversial, and unpopular opinions from government persecution.

See, I didn't care much when Colbert got cancelled because it seemed like it was a business decision, sure, whatever. But this? This is MAGA crossing a line that should never be crossed. We're starting to enter into actual tyranny territory from this administration. The only MAGA conservatives left are either slimy opportunists or blind loyalists, so I'm not holding my breath on them holding themselves accountable. However, I am hoping that everyone else stands up and takes a stand against this because the consequences of this are very, very serious.

I downvote anything that I deem worsens the quality of the community. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • misinformation

  • trolls

  • bad faith engagement

  • uncalled for hostility and incivility

  • very lazy, low effort posts/comments

Mastadon, Searx, Fediverse, and so on aren't killing or replacing the sites they're modeled after, not even close. They're just providing a privacy focused alternative for those who don't want to whored out by corporations or abused by powermods or shitty business decisions

Is there a company that's trying to destroy itself as much as Ubisoft? The CEO and board that's running this company are genuinely some of the dumbest motherfuckers in the world. These idiots are still dedicating significant resources to make NFT games, they're still trying to insist that microtransactions are fun, they refuse to do anything to make their games more enjoyable to players, and they're trying everything in their power to squeeze out their talent. At this point, Ubisoft deserves to collapse.

This is an incredibly dumb take. Tech isn't one dimensional and there isn't a "right" path to tech literacy. I grew up on Windows and I learned a lot of what I know by exploring my laptops and learning new things out of necessity. I ended majoring in CS in working in tech. My sister, who's 5 years younger than me, had Chromebooks growing up both at home and at school, yet she's also a very proficient CS major. Using Chromebooks doesn't show that someone is bad at tech, that's just a baseless assumption.

Chromebooks are just another branch of tech, and there's really nothing wrong with them. They're basically Android tablets in laptop form. Google giving them to schools at a deeply discounted price is not a bad thing. Without them, many schools wouldn't have any sort of tech for their kids to work with. Chromebooks are incredibly useful tools that can enable teachers to incorporate material from the internet into their lessons and help streamline their work.

Hating on things for the sake of hating on them is just lazy and counterproductive. There's a lot to criticize Google for, Chromebooks are not one of them.

I find it funny that millions of people had no problem with an evil foreign government like the CCP, that's well known for collecting data for military purposes and spending mind boggling amounts on propaganda campaigns, controlling the app, but now draw the line at some Silicon Valley billionaire doing essentially the same thing.

I never liked the short content format so I never had an interest downloading TikTok, but I knew that I would never, ever download it when I learned that this Chinese app is actually banned in China. They a have a separate clone of this app that's exclusive to China that uses a different algorithm that promotes positive and educational content. The fact that billions of people use this shitty weaponized piece of Chinese spyware is depressing, especially when the Fediverse exists.

The actually reality is this:

Literally nothing is known about this woman outside of a single narrative written by a supposed 14th century Moroccan historian, Ibn Abi Zar', who we know nothing about either outside of him being a historian. Actually, most academics doubt that he was any sort of scholar to begin with because the source of this information is not reliable.

There's literally ZERO evidence to support that this historian was one or that this woman was even real. In fact there's evidence that supports the notion that this story is fake because the inscriptions inside the mosque use a different script than what is claimed in the story. Most academics are skeptical of her existence and her story is treated as a cultural legend rather than historical fact.

Also within the folktale story, which by the way was written over 600 years after her supposed death, claims that she, along with her sister, inherited the wealth from their wealthy merchant father, and they both decided to use that fortune to build two parallel mosques in the same city.

The thing is that mosques in the early islamic periods were more like community centers than purely religious institutions. So it wasn't uncommon for mosques to have a learning center as a part of the complex. Keep in mind, these learning centers were islamic schools that taught islam. They weren't centers for researching and preserving knowledge like modern universities.

Over time, these mosques were repurposed to the needs of their time. Some were turned into purely religious institutions, some were demolished, some were turned into political seats of power, some remained community centers, and some evolved into purely islamic madrasas. Al Qarawiyyin was one of the latter. So this post is nothing more than blatant misinformation.

Tl;dr: This story is fake, this person isn't real, the historical source is unreliable, and the institution is not an actual university but a mosque that later became an islamic madrasa.

Allegations of sexual crimes should always be taken seriously and addressed immediately, however, that's not the same as taking the words of the victims words as the truth. A due process has to be mandatory and proof must remain a non negotiable requirement to arrest and punish someone. That's the one and only way justice can be served.

That's already a problem in Mexico. American immigrants have been moving to the nice parts of Mexico, and they have been inflating the ever living fuck out of the prices there. American money is unmatched, and no Mexican business is going to dumb enough to let it slip by. They've been increasing prices and catering to Americans to the point where Mexicans are being squeezed out entirely from the equation.

There are parts of Mexico city where Mexicans are completely priced out. People with houses in the nice parts try to sell them to Americans to get more money. Developers are building condo buildings that cater to American styles, and they're entirely branded and marketed in English. Businesses in the area notice the increase in Americans walking around and jack up their prices to get a share of the pie themselves, which leads Americans to get another part of the city that's still cheap to get the most out of their money repeating the cycle. Americans have already been doing this to countries like Spain, Portugal, and Italy, but now they're doing it to Mexico too.
