I'm not sure if it's the same scientists, but the YouTube channel The Thought Emporium has an ongoing series about growing neurons to play retro games (such as OG DOOM).

The playlist of this series is fittingly called Building the Torment Nexus.

If you're interacting with a command line terminal frequently then yes, since Ctrl+Shift+C is the shortcut for copy in most terminal emulators as Ctrl+C is used for terminating the current running command.

The drink or this community?

The drink is called -196 because they flash freeze the fruit used to flavour it using liquid nitrogen and liquid nitrogen evaporates at -196°C.

This community is called 196 because it's named after the original r/196 subreddit, which was created after the r/195 shit posting subreddit shut down, which was named after the subreddit owners old college dorm room number (195).

Lexical sorting (string sorting/alphabetical order sorting) is what I believe they were referring to when talking about file names.

The fact that you don't have to do any parsing of the string at all, just do a straight character-by-character alphabetical sort, and they will be sorted by date, is a great benifit of this date scheme. That means in situations where no special parsing is set up (eg, in a File Explorer windows showing a folders contents sorted alphabetically) or where your string isn't strictly date only (eg, a file name format such as '2025-05-02 - Project 3.pdf') you can still have everything sorted by date just by sorting alphabetically.

Its this benifit that is lost when rolling over to 5-digit years.

When trying to run gentoo, if you're emerging with fewer than a few dozen cores (either in a single machine with something like a threadripper, or in a cluster with distcc), then I highly recommend using the binary versions of certain packages. This can be done either with -bin versions of packages, or something like the Gentoo Binary Host Project.

Packages that particularly benifit from using binary versions would primarily web browser or web browser adjacent packages such as Firefox, Chrome, QTWebEngine, but really any particularly large compile that doesn't benifit from compiling locally (eg: not that many use flags, not likely to use any additional CPU features you might have such as avx512). In fact, bin versions of Web browsers often will perform much better than locally compiled versions since they are compiled with additional optimisations that either make the compile time even longer (O3 and LTO), or require additional manual steps (such as PGO where the unoptomised browser is compiled and ran through real-world workloads with a profiler attached to identify code hotpaths so the compiler can optimise more efficiently during a second complete compile run).

Extremely competent, saying Signal is not private by design.

While very disingenuous, it's not technically incorrect.

Signal is secure by design, and is extremely good at that with a very well designed and vetted cryptographic protocol.

But privacy isn't one of their primary goals, nor should it if it comes at the cost of security; for example, for the longest time you needed to share your phone number with everyone you wanted to talk to, and everyone in every group chat you are a part of could see it.

Yes, this is true that prices are continuing to rise because they're still being bought at that high price, but most of that isn't consumers (and/or "enthusiasts") absolutely needing it no matter the cost.

The price is what it is because ai and cloud compute companies are willing to pay that insanely inflated price, so if you want even the chance to get any dram, you need to be willing to pay more than OpenAI/Microsoft/Google/NVIDIA/etc are, for Samsung/SK Hynix/Micron to even consider you.

Why would they bother selling their dram chips in consumer packages for a fraction of what enterprises are willing to pay. The price is what it is, because that's the price that it becomes worth it for the dram manufacturers to actually care about the consumer market.

Fun fact:
Construction robots in the roboport area youre standing in can use items in your logistics trash slots in your inventory to build things since your logistics trash slots effectivley act as an active provider chest within the logistics network you're standing in.

(But your personal construction robots cannot use items in your logistics trash slots since theyre considered not part of your inventory)

Matrix is a poor choice from a cryptographic perspective. With some serious issues historically (some of which are still unfixed to this day), and an extremely poor response to disclosures.

It's basic but, science cost modifier. You don't have to go crazy like the 1000x playthroughs some people are doing, but a 10x, 6x, or even a 4x can vastly change how you play the game. Needing 4x the labs, 4x the production, 4x the miners; or you need to wait 4x as long; it means you spend much longer at each progression stage so you can properly experience them without trying to cobble something basic so you can skip straight to the good techs and "optimal" builds.

You need to start thinking about scale from the beginning, not just when you decide to go infinite with a mega base. If you leave other settings default then you have to start worrying about pollution a lot more, about pushing back biters more, about running out of resources more.

If you don't want to be defending from bitters 10x as much, decrease pollution to 1/10th the default, if you don't care much for resource acquisition, boost patch size and richness. That way you'll still have a 'default' experience for that particular aspect, so it won't feel "cheesy" but it won't be the focus of the run like production scale is.

If you're doing an @world emerge, then you'll be recompiling all installed packages with updates, including dependencies.

One of the heavier packages that's included in almost every desktop profile as a dependency somewhere is dev-qt/qtcore (full list of packages in the standard desktop profile here, though each package listed here will have its own dependencies which may have their own dependencies, etc. So it is not an exhaustive list), qtcore also appears to be what was compiling when the photo in your post was taken so is likely the primary cause of that specific long build time.

Yeah exactly, why bother making DDR4/5 memory when HBM makes so much more money since companies are willing to pay insane amounts for it.

So the price of DDR4/5 will rise to whatever price AI and compute companies are willing to pay for HBM as that's the only point it becomes somewhat worth it for manufacturers to care.

You bring up a lot of good points, but something I would to add is that there is a reason why you wouldn't want it to act like a standard xinput device without steam.

One big usecase for the steam controller is as the primary (and possibly only) input for a HTPC (such as the steam machine). So having the controller act as a basic keyboard and mouse without steam (ie: lizard mode) allows you to navigate menus that a standard controller can't such as pre-boot Operating System menus or BIOS menus without having to breakout a keyboard and mouse.
