I’m excited by the potential of the fediverse, and I want the fediverse to grow. That means more users. However, the noncommercial nature of the fediverse is why I’m excited by it in the first place. I couldn’t care less if there’s yet another gigantic social network full of ads.

Allowing any profit-driven interest to influence the fediverse risks destroying what makes the fediverse interesting and special. I’m not willing to risk the fediverse in order to grow it.

In related news, Elon Musk has been adamant about ending remote work, but that’s likely to be difficult without, you know, office space.

I like this journalist.

Twitter disbanded its press arm and its trust and safety council, so there’s nobody to reach out to for comment.

I really like this journalist.

Maybe I’m a dork, but I think“correlation does not equal causation” is actually a good thing to keep in mind.

I’m reminded of it every time a news story says something is “linked” to something else. I hate it when the word “linked” is used in this way. It’s often lazy journalism and/or a scare tactic. Saying that two things are “linked” implies a stronger relationship than may actually exist. I find it deliberately misleading.

So… a bunch of hateful, ignorant jerks are going to be even more obnoxious than usual? And they think that’s a good thing?

If the blackouts aren’t enough to drive people away, this will. Congratulations, reddit! You’re getting the user base you deserve!

I’m one of those people who came here from reddit, and I couldn’t be happier with the way things are run, with what you have to say in the “New users, and maintaining our promise” section, and the “be(e) nice” philosophy in general.

I’d become much less active on reddit over the last few months. In particular, I’d gotten sick of people who seem to think that “free speech” is a license to stir the shit and face zero consequences. I wasn’t crazy about the for-profit mindset of the owners, either.

I’ve only been here a few days, but it looks like the Beehaw community is what I’ve wanted all along, but didn’t know it!

People who refused to wear a mask during Covid pissed me off, because they were helping spread the disease and getting others sick. This time, I don’t care nearly as much. Their idiocy isn’t endangering my friends and family.

It always makes me smirk when they show a car zooming down a completely empty city street.

The only way that’s going to happen is if you blow through a barricade. I almost expect them to plow into a bunch of marathon runners or something.

Then again, he’s Canadian and I’m an American lol

The vast majority of the time, yes… but if someone built tools and volunteered their time to help make that platform better, I’ll cut them some slack.

That’s one of the least reassuring statements I’ve ever seen a company make about their own product. They’re basically saying “it sucks less than the other stuff we’ve crapped out!”

The first time I clicked the link, it tried to change browsers on me. I said no. Then it looked like it was actually going to let me read the text, but instead demanded that I use the reddit app. I gave up.

Thanks to @peanuts4life@beehaw.org for posting a readable version!

I agree wholeheartedly. I didn’t like downvotes, but I didn’t realize how terrible the concept of downvotes really was until I lived without it.

Here’s my comment from another thread:

I wasn’t a fan of Reddit’s downvote system. It was a pointless, vague way to show displeasure without actually providing any useful information. I never knew if a downvote was because I made a comment that was factually wrong, the reader had a differing opinion, or simply because I made a grammatical error. Plus, there’s brigading. By itself, a downvote doesn’t really tell you anything.

I’m sure that in at least some cases, a genuine discussion (rather than a simple downvote) would have been more thought-provoking for everyone.

Par for the course.

Posts like that actually deserve to be brigaded, but nobody wants to throw rocks at the hornet’s nest. Honestly, I can’t blame people for avoiding and ignoring that cesspool.

I love that upvotes exist on Beehaw, but not downvotes. No more brigading. Now, if someone disagrees, they actually have to comment. Ideally, that leads to actual conversation instead of ME NO LIKE. ME CLICK DOWN ARROW.

A while ago, the less I heard about Tate, the better. Watching this unfold has been highly entertaining, though. I hope he goes to prison for a LONG time.

"To ensure the victims' loyalty and that they will perform only to the benefit of the members of the group, they were forced to tattoo the name or face of the group member exploiting them," prosecutors said in a statement.

Well, that’s another gross detail that I wasn’t aware of. Damn.

It’s good that the story ends in a way that reminds you to have empathy for the victims.

It was also not removed when the telecast was rerun late at night.

That tells you everything you need to know about how seriously Fox News regarded the situation.
