For those keeping up at home, "encouraging the submission of sexually-explicit content in previously safe-for-work spaces" is now against the rules, since marking a subreddit NSFW is also against the rules.
But what it really boils down to is their system not requiring users to opt back into a subreddit after it switches to NSFW. It's an edge case. So they call it a rule violation instead.

It's 64k letters long and you can repeat it back to me when I'm done.
It's "A".
This. It's the new trend in streaming: Get better ROI for funding new content instead of paying residuals on your back catalog. The market is heading in a direction where subscribers won't just stick around forever if you're not constantly feeding them something new. So it makes more sense to put the money there instead.
"Max" has already dropped a lot of original content for this exact reason. And you can expect to continue seeing this trend across the streaming industry.
Remember the ongoing writers' strike? The pittance that they get paid in residuals from streaming is one of their main complaints. So you can expect the practice to accelerate after the strike is over.
The content will be shopped around to other platforms. You can probably expect some of it to end up on freemium/advertisement-based streaming services. The rest will just go into the proverbial vault.
Based on some of the comments in the now NSFW subs, it looks like there is a pretty serious edge case that reddit does not handle: setting the sub to NSFW retains subscribers. Does that not mean that people may end up being delivered NSFW posts without opting in?
If it were only about the ads, they would allow third party apps to show their ads via the API.
The statistical data that they collect from your usage is still extremely valuable. They're still fingerprinting you and tracking you around the site. They're still A/B testing you with suggested content.

The threadiverse has gaping fundamental flaws in its implementation. It will of course get better over time. But damn. This isn't great.
