There is also the recent !woodpushers@quokk.au.

There are not enough active users on Lemmy/Piefed, there is obviously even less so that are playing chess. I'm not sure creating a new instance will solve that issue (I just joined, though ;)

I have never heard of woodpusher before as a term for chess, so idk

It is probably not the name I would have picked myself (even though I qualify for it) , but it's a classic, kinda ;)

Why couldn't they? Provided they learn to speak and to listen to spoken French. It won't be easy to begin with but like with anything new, the more you do it the better you get.

As far being of different origins, things aren't that simple:

  • English share a lot of vocabulary with French. Even though of German origin, it also has been influenced a lot by Latin, like French obviously.
  • France invaded England a few centuries ago (William the Conqueror was the French Guillaume le Conquérant) and it lasted long enough to have a real impact on the English language.
  • To make things even more complicated, the French language itself, the one spoken by the French people is historically linked to the 'Francs' population (French is 'Français', in French) that, to grossly summarize, invaded Gauls following the final collapse of the Roman Empire, migrating from what is now Germany (very roughly speaking). So is it kinda... German too? but it would take a few more centuries before what we now consider as French language would resemble anything like French. At the very least, I would say it would at least need to wait for Charlemagne (approx 300 years after Clovis) and maybe even for le cardinal de Richelieu (XVII century/ under the rein of Louis XIII) when he founded the Académie Française (still active today) as a way to promote a single & common language through the entire kingdom of France... which up until then (and for a few more centuries, up well into the XXth the French government had to work hard to reduce the usage of regional languages) was filled with countless argots and patois, or dialects as you would say in English.

Why the need to reinvent money for what used to simply be called being (good) neighbors or being members of a community helping one another, that was money-less? By putting even a tokenized form of money into play, like others have already mentioned, one is risking turning it into a business, with any kind of abuse... Even more so if said money has an expiry date on it (why? and how would that be considered fair?)

But it’s a human who gave their pipeline away, this is a human mistake, not a technological one.

In order to be responsible/accountable for any mistake, one would first need to be declared a conscious being. Luckily for us, nor AI nor any other tool has been declared such. So, as far as I'm concerned AI should never been considered responsible for anything.

I personally refuse to blame the hammer.

But since it's a tool it should also not be allowed to sign or to author anything under it's so called 'name'. Van Gogh's paintings are signed Van Gogh, not Van Gogh + the brand of the brush maker + the brand of the pigments he used (if he did not make his own).

The question should never have been about blaming the hammer (or the flint stone, or the nuclear missile, or the AI). That's part of their trick to make it close to impossible to critic their work: wanting us to think this is 'just a hammer'.

The thing is that by its very design (man made) that tool is more than just a hammer,

  • it's a take on the world (the whole world, ie see how they want to be allowed to use nuclear power, all the water they can get, and all the components for the sole purpose of keeping their privately owned AI working to generate themselves more profits),
  • it's a take on the society we're to live in (what kind of society, what kind of political model, what kind of rules for them and for us, and
  • it's a take on the population... on every single one of us and what place/role/...job we can expect to get in that new society they're creating without asking for our consent first... also by pillaging our very own work and productions.

So, by all mean, don't blame the hammer but also don't just consider it a mere hammer. It's a fatal mistake.

I mean, no hammer has ever threatened our very ability to educate our kids (and ourselves)... Because in the end, it may very well what they're after (not the AI, that stupid high-tech hammer, but those owning selling its services to... us), making it so that being an educated individual aka, a citizen of one's own country able to analyze by oneself any new/unexpected problem and find ways to solve it by ourselves, may not be required anymore. Why not making it optional to even be able to think and to express oneself in more than monosyllables...

Edit: clarifications. + too many typos (I'm blaming the keyboard here, the tool itself, not the human handling it: it's a real shitty keyboard :p)

For those who lost weight, what was it like for you? Did people start treating you differently?

Yes, I immediately started noticing a change in people... as well as in myself (feeling more confident for the most stupid reason: the way people would look at me). Because the real trick is that it's not just 'them' being weird, it's us.

I had to reteach myself to behave like I used to but I kept on losing weight (not thin by any mean but not the obese dude I had been for so many years), because that was what I needed to do in order to preserve what remained of my health.

I’m getting annoyed with people that ask a question, have the community answer their question and troubleshoot over several days, only to delete their post and the solution.

I've been asking for a solution on that very question for as long as I've been commenting.

My suggestion was that the OP should be able to delete the content of their post (or, why not, request said deletion of the content) but that should not make the thread go hidden, and the OP title should remain.

The person asking the question is often providing the least amount of effort

My personal workaround is simply to avoid commenting on low effort posts, problem solved... for me at least.

Provided I already know where I will sleep and take care of my little person:

  • Chemist/pharmacy, as I need daily medications without which, after a too short while, there won't be much of me left.
  • Public libraries, and also bookshops (new/used).
  • A place where I can sit at a table and be left alone to work, if I fancy so.
  • Some cool places I can walk to? (parks, art galleries, museums, chess club, any kind of cool places). Walking is my friend and I will walk as much as I can. So, I like to find cool new places I can walk to. If there are no cool place, I will just walk around.
  • Office supply. My job happens between the tip of a pen(cil) and a sheet of paper, and if I always have spares with me I prefer having options.
  • If the place I live at provides no meal (handmade cooking, not some microwave junk) I will either:
look for a restaurant offering actual food (non hyper-processed shit).
look for a grocery store selling fresh/bio/locally sourced if at all possible, food that I can cook myself. A big plus if I can also find artisanal cheese (yes, I'm French).
  • Artisanal bakery selling handmade bread/pastries. Industrial bread should be declared illegal and a crime (see my previous remark about cheese ;)
  • A nice café/pub. Nice as in 'this is some quiet and comfy place (without too loud music/tv, I'm 100% fine with people chatting, like actually chatting not the yelling drunkard kind) that sells great coffee and/or tea' (even though I'm French, I've not touched alcohol in the last 30 years, and have zero desire to change that).

Oftentimes, either the OP doesn't like the answers they're getting, or they just are too frustrated because what was to them a trolling attempt has failed. At least, those are what I witness the most often. Why is that so? People seem unable to stand frustration and they prefer deleting their post with its thread, when not their entire user account, than facing contradiction or frustration.

Silly but not surprising, sadly.
