Here's to 20 writing club update 🍻 and here's to 20 more ! 🍻
As I've mentioned a few days ago, I'm in a rut. I'm brute forcing my way out of it, for now. I'll keep y'all posted if anything changes.

Before we can (and want to) get tech workers to unionize, there needs to be a shift in culture in the tech industry. Right-wing libertarian ideals are very prevalent in tech, especially in Silicon Valley. This has been the case for years and has already greatly influenced tech legislation in the United States and the world. Class solidarity is almost non-existent at a lot of big tech firms.
That being said, there are of course many tech workers who understand the importance of the class struggle and who are ready to organize. I'll add some links to the tech workers coalition and to a podcast which unveils a lot of the hidden politics of the tech industry, tech won't save us.
On another note, interoperability naturally arises from well designed and largely adopted open standards.
I'm a sucker for well-researched hard sci-fi!
Have you found it challenging to expound these concepts without detracting from the rest of the text? Additionally, have you discovered any differences in writing technically as opposed to narratively?
I looked into what well-known authors do and I believe it was Stephen King who said something similar. There's also someone that recommended you append a couple line summary of what you wrote at the end of each day. The next day, you can simply read that to get going again.
This month I hardly began progress on my thesis before having my heart broken. I'm trying to get back into the habit of writing daily, but some days I can hardly focus on a single sentence for more than a few minutes.
Perhaps I can write about the breakup. Maybe that will help.
Edit: It's been relieving to read through everyone else's updates. I'm not going to set a goal for the next month, it seems to daunting to me right now. I'll write back soon.
I love this guide! It's full of details I never would have thought of if asked to prepare a food-sharing before reading it. It's also a quick read. Concise and informative.
He may just talk like that, but I think Doctorow is going through, as comprehensively as his allotted time slot will allow, the talking points he and the host have prepared beforehand. Keeping this in mind and taking into account the audience likely doesn't know what a "protocol" is, I think it's fine that he doesn't mention ActivityPub. Perhaps he mentions it in his book. I'll check it out if it lands in my local library's bookshelves.
I'm glad Emma Roth, the author of the verge article, included a resource listing alternatives to the challenge: https://hcpl.net/...
I’ve started a rough website for my indie/smol/fedi/etc web presence, linked in my profile.
Cool! I'll check it out.
Thanks, @grrgyle@slrpnk.net, for taking the time to organize this club! I really appreciate it.
Hi everyone! I'm going to have to submit my master's thesis by the end of the year. I'd like to improve my writing substantially before sending off my final draft.
This month, I'd like to write a short essay or a short story. Get the ball rolling and all.

On page 27, there's an article which will be of interest to the folks over here on slrpnk.net : "Go get a Garden Server". This article builds upon @hannahilea's An ode to houseplant programming 🪴
Consider checking out /c/writing , where aspiring and seasoned writers/solarpunks discuss their craft.
Well, seeing as today's the last day of February, I should update you all on what I've done and what I'd like to do. I've progressed on my thesis. I've also started writing a story. I don't know how long it will be, though.
It's about a stable boy who dreams of becoming a knight. He falls in love with the Count's daughter.
I'm tackling themes of persistence despite the certainty of failure. I believe the theme somewhat resonates with Solarpunk. Indeed, as we all know, recent efforts tackling the climate crisis are more about harm reduction than preventing harm outright.
I look forward to learning how you typeset your non-verbal communication, as well as discovering this form of communication in your story.
On another note, I hadn't given much thought to how switching everyday between editing and drafting, as opposed to seldomer, could slow one down. I recognize now that I systematically get bogged down by my habit.
Hey grrgyle, I love "soy on the bean"!
Of course! I overlooked the medium which, as you've well explained, lends itself nicely to exposition. I very much enjoyed reading your reply, learning about the advantages of writing for games. Thank you
Awesome! I wouldn't call this "releasing moisture" though which, to me, implies a physical change. It's straight up providing the activation energy for a chemical decomposition.
I don't get all these "geo-engineering" magic bullets. Capitalists are taking carbon out of the ground and putting it into the air and oceans. The carbon in the air leads to warming, and the carbon in the ocean leads to acidification. Both of these things are disastrous. We need to stop the capitalists. Leave the carbon in the ground, where it belongs. Simple as
