When I was a kid and would send very stuffed letters, we just left a dollar paper clipped to it, they would leave the change the next day for heavier stuff.

When I was even younger I used to leave flowers in the mailbox for the mail person, and they got me a little flower statue for xmas and left it in the mailbox for me. That’s a memory I haven’t thought of in a long time so that was pleasant :)

On iOS, 5 quick presses doesn’t call emergency services, it reverts your phone to a pre-login state and gives you emergency options, so you can easily call 911, but it’s not required to use it.

This is super helpful to know if you have biometrics enabled. So cops can’t hold your phone in front of your face to unlock it if you do this.

The takeaway that I got here is basically that even a burner phone can hypothetically be linked to you, if you take it home with you after a protest. And if you aren’t using a burner phone, they can get so much granular historical data about you that your whole life is laid bare.

And zero warrants required, because of course this needs to be abused as much as possible.

What do normal people even do about this sort of thing? Flock cameras at least can be disabled or hacked, but this? We don’t have access to cell towers nor the ability to choose which we connect to, we don’t meaningfully have the ability to opt out of data tracking.

I agree with you but it’s a minefield. And the goalposts shift. For example, one time I was leaving a bar after stopping for food on my way home from work. I brought a comic book to read as a signal I didn’t want to chit-chat. This took place in the parking lot, with a guy easily double my age, and I’m no spring chicken.

Most people who work the service industry don’t claim cash tips, but credit tips are required to be claimed due to the whole being electronic and traceable thing.

If, as a service person, most or all tips are in cash, you just claim whatever brings you to minimum wage for that pay period.

This is obviously heavily dependent upon where you work - some places want you to claim all tips (but you still don’t claim cash usually) others, especially if you make above min wage like most bartenders, don’t care.

However, if you don’t claim those tips you can’t use that as income when taking out loans and applying for housing and whatever else. So it’s fucks people over pretty regularly.

Having seen an absolute gob of these comments, I’m inclined to agree. They all read largely the same way, there’s an awful lot of comments for being a 1 day account (easily rivaling some of the most prolific humans we’ve had), some of them make very little sense, and they are all top level with very very very few replies to anyone, but they still address other commenters in their top level comment which is super weird. They also only seem to comment on images. Or at least I haven’t seen any that didn’t.

There was another account, cosmicpancake, that was basically the same. I didn’t realize they were not the same account. That one was purged.
