I dunno man, there are some things that are simple enough that we don’t need a double blind study for. The general idea: will more conversation be generated about a controversial topic that:

A) Is hidden in the shadows; or

B) Open and blatantly in public

You’re deliberately missing the point. Whether you watch it or not, that it is televised brings the issue of execution to the public’s attention:

  1. If a country is going to execute people, it should have the honesty to show the public what that actually means
  2. if the public can’t handle public executions, they should perhaps revisit why they want something they are unable to bring themselves to watch.
  3. Regardless of intent, making executions public is increasing public dialogue about executions. We can see that correlation in other countries above. Improved communication modes correlated with abolition.
  4. If that increased public dialogue focuses on the fact that the executions are public and not that they are happening at all, that shows a basic dishonesty about what the problem actually is.

Pre radio and tv, and interestingly the human rights revolution in western nations aligns well with increased public discourse allowed by radio and tv.

Key Abolition Timeline in the Western World

  • 19th Century:

    • San Marino: 1865 (last execution in 1468)
    • Costa Rica & Venezuela: 1859 / 1863 [1, 2]
  • Post-World War II (1940s–1960s):

    • West Germany: 1949 (following World War II)
    • Italy: 1948 (civil crimes; total abolition in 1994) [1, 2]
  • Late 20th Century Wave (1970s–1990s):

    • Portugal: 1976
    • Denmark: 1978
    • Norway: 1979
    • France: 1981 (under President François Mitterrand)
    • Australia: 1985 (completed across all states/territories)
    • New Zealand: 1989
    • Canada: 1998 (abolished for ordinary crimes in 1976 and completely for all military/remaining offenses in 1998)
    • United Kingdom: 1998 (de facto ended in 1965, formally abolished for all remaining offenses like treason in 1998)

The reaction is about as expected. Throwing hands in the air, deflecting responsibility and running away. Home of the brave, clearly.

Get together with like minded Americans and stop the practice then. Executions ARE more than normalized in the USA. All that’s changed now is that it’s more obvious to you and that makes you uncomfortable.

The correct action is to stop executions, not to force them back behind the curtains.

Definitely. So get like minded Americans together and do something about it

Exactly. And if you and your fellow Americans aren’t ok with that you need to do more to put a government in place that will stop the practice entirely.

Hiding executions in the shadows is clearly not controversial enough to get Americans to stop the practice. Maybe this will be. It will for sure expose what America is at its core.

True. I don’t think it ultimately matters that they’re doing it for the cruelty. I still think they stumbled on the right solution if Americans insist on continuing with capital punishment

I hate these jerks but I think this is the right thing to do for two reasons. Firing squad death is about as humane as we have. Lethal injection is too error prone and can end as torture instead of death. I also think that if you as a society are going to execute people, it should be public so that people have to see the actual consequences of execution. If it’s too gory to watch, maybe don’t do executions?

Is your anger at the fact that the execution is happening, or that it’s public?

If it’s just that it’s public, then what that tells me is that actually you’re fine with it as long as it’s hidden from you.

I was interested in this comparison so I did a small amount of research on total cost of living in Vancouver vs Stockholm Sweden for a high earner like a doctor, lawyer @$330k CAD with a modest 3 bedroom home (townhouse) along with the proposed NDP tax increases. This is the conclusion. High earners under the proposed system in Vancouver get the high taxes of Sweden with the high cost of living of right wing capitalism:

  • You save more cash in Stockholm:Despite losing an extra $1,717 CAD every single month to Swedish income taxes, the structural sanity of the Swedish housing market saves you $3,091 CAD a month in raw mortgage math. This leaves you with roughly $1,380 CAD more surplus cash per month in Stockholm.
  • The Equity Difference: In Vancouver, you are building equity on a larger asset ($1.27M vs $912k), but you are heavily exposed to interest rate volatility. If rates jump 1% at renewal in Canada, your budget breaks. In Sweden, your exposure is mitigated by the interest tax write-off.

Until you and like minded Americans force change, this is what America is.

More likely, they instigated hateful rhetoric and were called out on it. They didn’t understand that they were being called out for their hateful views and words so it’s easier to say, “they yelled at me because I’m a white cis man” when the truth would force introspection

Regardless, his investments are in a blind trust. He hasn’t known what specific companies he is invested in since placing them in the trust. All he knows is what the overall performance of his investments is. That’s it.

There is a lot of misinformation and half information being thrown around about how blind trusts work, but the premise is as simple as that.

No. Yes. And any sonar that exists already in use and has been since its invention. Mariners are asked to turn sonar devices off when near whales.

It sounds like they’re talking about some sort of flir device.

On my old 2006, you can nudge the signal arm part way (like where you would hold it to signal if you want it to go off after you release it) also by going to that position in the direction you’re already signaling. You don’t have to go past the bump and you can do it in either direction.

No - Carney knows exactly what his investments were when they entered the blind trust. He does not know what they are now.
