Mint is a good suggestion for a new user. An underrated distro, but solid, simple, and works well for any purpose.
@lemmy.world
Go with an AMD graphics card over Nvidia, even if it costs significantly more. with Nvidia you will need to deal with shitty drivers (similar to Windows) and eventually your GPU will stop being supported. Also niche distros may have extra steps required to get everything working.
With AMD your card just works great no matter the distro, no matter how old the card gets. I never think about my GPU because it works at full performance every time with zero setup
CPU matters less: Intel and AMD are both solid on Linux
Linux can live with less RAM than Windows and work fine, but with more RAM Linux will intelligently cache frequently accessed files to speed up pretty much every program. Linux looks like it's using more resources but it's actually using them for something useful, and Linux will still back off if something you are doing actually needs more RAM
I always tell people "you can't fall off a unicycle". I've actually fallen once and nobody was around to see.
99.9% of the time you can easily dismount and let the cycle drop, but once in a while you can actually fall
I've never "debloated" Windows so idk about the top half.
The bottom half is accurate. Debian, Fedora, and Mint are easier to install than Windows 10 or 11. Not that Windows is difficult, it's just a bit clunky and idiosyncratic.
I assume Microsoft doesn't care much about the installer since it's generally only used by OEMs, whereas for Linux distros it's a first impression so it has to be polished.
“Mozilla has a bit been shady lately, so we are making the difficult decision to change our default browser to something significantly more shady. We are confident our users will feel safer knowing their data is in even worse hands than before"
You should switch to Firefox with ublock origin.
Brave is a mess of a browser and a dumpster fire of an organization, even compared to the famously dysfuctional Mozilla.
You can look up your games on ProtonDB and see which will and won't work. Pirated games are no different from retail compatibility-wise but there might be one or two extra steps
Nothing new here. E2E is only available in one on one chats and is disabled by default. Dont use Telegram if privacy is your main concern.
At least it has an open-source client. Very few messaging platforms can say that, and fewer have a decent UX.
It's not perfect, but it's got a good combination of features and multi-platform availability. None of the other messaging apps support all of my devices except Matrix, and Matrix doesn't have stickers
Edit: Signal doesn't support all my devices but maybe someday! The network effect is also big. None of my family and friends are on Signal, but most have Telegram. A few have Matrix.
Also Signal is a US-based company.
Edit 2: Matrix does have stickers, i guess I'm switching
IBT is on the stronger/darker side, Darjeeling is on the lighter side.
IBT should be rich, dark, high in caffeine, with a strong flavor that doesnt get overpowered by milk, or ruined by a little oversteeping. It can still be burned if you use water that's too hot.
Darjeeling should be amber-colored, light tasting, moderate in caffeine, and should have some floral notes. The flavors can be drowned out by milk or oversteeping in my opinion. Best black and lightly steeped in sub-boiling water.
The version available on Disney+ omits the sad song sung between Scrooge and his fiance as she breaks up with him for his avarice. As a kid i didn't like it much, but as an adult i realize that it's a critical emotional turning point for the movie.
Without that song, the whole film feels rather hollow.
The original film is one of my favorite Muppet movies and Christmas Carol adaptations. The loss of that song is a shame.
I've given up on GOG. No linux client means the whole process of installing/launching games is rather tedious. Also linux game dependencies can be annoying to resolve
Steam on the other hand just handles everything. If it doesn't work at first, it probably will with proton.
I'd love to support an anti-DRM store, but it's tough when there is so much friction when actually playing the games
In a sense i agree, but the crash was in Summer in North Dakota and they are European honeybees.
Honeybees are quite invasive in North America. They kill and displace native pollinators and they are generally less effective pollinators of native plants. The release of dozens more colonies into the ecosystem is a negative thing no matter how you look at it.
North America has the greatest native bee diversity of any temperate part of the world, but if you go out into habitat and actually start counting insects you will find honeybees outnumber everything else in most places, most times of year.
The modern concept of race was invented in 1684 by this guy:
It's been utter bullshit from the start
The biggest winnable fight right now is habitat protection and restoration. Visit natural places with them, show them how to protect those spaces, and plant native plants in your area to help the local ecosystem. Learn about the flora and fauna native to your area and teach your children to recognize and care for them.
Habitat destruction could destroy our biosphere well before climate change, but healthy ecosystems will better withstand CC.
It doesnt solve everything, but it helps.
Now is a good time to try Jellyfin
thanks for using Leebra!
