I do agree that it's annoying that they reuse names but Earendil/Pi are completely different from e.g. Palantir. IMHO Pi is all about making LLMs accessible to everyone and is a lot more suited to locally hosted models due to its minimalism.

In my mind, a lot of the criticism of AI is really about the closed source models a la OpenAI/Anthropic. There are small models that are trained on (relatively) small amounts of compute, without copyrighted material and which cost next to nothing to run on a moderately powerful gaming PC. Making those models more useful is a win in my book.

Andrej Karpathy is absolutely a nerd to me. He's not about selling you LLMs but about teaching you how to build your own (I recommend checking his videos out, they are one of the best resources on LLMs)

Effective at what? Germany capitulated only once it was almost fully occupied (e.g. Berlin, Rhineland). The bombs might have helped by binding resources and demoralizing the population but that didn't affect the capitulation directly.
