We need to have ownership our own products again. This needs to be enshrined in law.

I don't think that user was personally complaining, more pointing out that LW might be facing it's first crisis of resources. Good sys-ops people don't come cheap, and bad one often can do far more harm than help.

It's tricky trying to handle something like this when LW is foundationally not an enterprise or anything close to a business.

So here is the rub. Sit down with a true Trumper sometime, and show them these sorts of quotes. They ARE voting for this. They DO support this. They think this is the right and just thing to do.

This can be handled a few different ways.

  • You can boot from a HDD and then just not ever write data back to it. This would be the most trivial solution, and it's something people do with their Pi's a lot to avoid SD card failure.
  • You could network boot, pull the OS from the network at startup. Fun fact, this is how some rockets fly! No onboard persistent storage needed. Everything boots into and runs from ram the whole 10 ish minutes of operation.
  • You COULD do a ROM as you suggested, but that's a LOT of ROM. Seems odd to do imho.

The vast majority of consumers don’t care. They look for a product which is in their budget, and they think does what they want.

The market will select for companies which and most profitable.

The best thing to do is to pass laws that make this practice of enshitification illegal.

I cannot fathom the relief this person must have once he was in custody. One trigger happy soldier and you are over. Good on those follow sensible rules of engagement here.

I suspect their issue is more the exploitation of children, not them carrying a beer.

This sounds a lot like we all talked the first time Trump won.

When will people learned to stop underestimating the stupidity of the American population? They can and will elect this fuck if given a shot.

That and insane production budgets. A lot of stream services are dumping hundreds of millions into shows that... Really didn't need that?

Aye, but forcing them to put a clear "We support this until this date" label will make that a mandated part of their marketed.

That or, you know, force companies to release server software when they sunset support for their product. That would also be nice.

When the US pulled out the Taliban didn't have to fight to take control. The population was ready and willing to put them back into power.

This was the choice the country made. It's not our place to step into their internal politics at this point. The US did that for years and they decided very clearly they didn't want that.

Exactly. It’s not a matter of the metal housing this stuff, it’s the sheer volume of traffic and cost that all the noise makes.
