Linus used to shame large companies for not contributing to open source, now he shames devs for not using the large companies closed source software.

Cool to see someone pull this kind of malware apart. Interesting read.

Torrents are pretty terrible without private trackers. Since majority of free sites have no access to an API and require prowlarr/jacket to create one, a cloudflare slover to bypass bot protections and even then it's janky.

If you use private trackers, you now have to keep seeding downloads to keep your ratio healthy, and require additional trickery to allow files to be seeded after sorting by sonarr.

Usenet is plug and play, as the indexes are built with this functionality in mind and it's far less likely to run into malicious uploads, as there is curation occuring on the paid indexes, ie, they are insentivised to make the paying customer happy.

Steam is a private company, not publicly traded and has no VC funding.

VC funding and potential IPO normally means enshittification is inevitable, as they will eventually need to make insane profits by turning the screws on its users, as their business model wasn't self sustaining.

Verify the game data, it will re-download the game files. You can't really blame steam when you are changing files out side steams knowledge.

I stopped using Plex shortly after they started forcing logging in with your online Plex account to connect to LAN only based server. The writing was on the wall all those years ago. Who wants to be locked out of their media when the internet is offline, completely defeated the point of self hosting local infrastructure

Jellyfin, while lacking a bit when I first migrated, has continued improved over the years and it has been joyful to use. Plus Jellyfin supported hardware transcoding before Plex did, which was a gripe I had with Plex at the time.

I stream from my server remotely and share with Family without hassle. I dunno where Plex is trying to go, glad I bailed long ago

It's more the question of why is everyone folding to this age verification nonsense. One dumb state makes a law, now everyone is bending over backwards to comply. A state full of corruption no less, like what are the alteria motives.

Maybe parents should start, parenting their kids, rather than making the government parent them.

This won't happen, there is a lot of industrial software that digs it's fingers deep into windows subsystems that wine does not support. Even popular commercial, like adobe, cannot run on wine correctly

At this point I'm not even sure Microsoft knows how some of those sub systems work, they just migrating ancient code bases and patching it enough to make it work again on the new compilers.

So windows kernel will exist untill everyone else leaves.

Move your workflow away from windows, if you can, as Microsoft doesn't care enough about their userbase.

Industrial HVAC systems use water towers to cool the hot side of system. The method relies on physics of evaporative cooling to reduce temperatures of the water. The process requires water to be absorbed by atmosphere, to drive the cooling effect. (Lower the humidity, the higher the cooling efficiency is, as the air as greater potential to absorb and hold moisture).

The method is somewhat similar to power station cooling towers. Or even swamp coolers. (An odd example would be, experimental PC water cooling builds with 'bong coolers', which are evaporative coolers, built from drainage pipes)

There's probably a fortunate 500 company running some load bearing server from 20 years ago, that ends up back in production, everytime they fail to migrate the critical service away from it.

There must have been demand to keep x86 32bit alive this long.

You need an internet connection to connect to a offline LAN Plex server... Just so unessessery, otherwise it doesn't find your server (I was quite confused on that one, when that started happening) Plus having to pay for multiple user accounts, all just seemed like it was heading towards user extortion. It also lacked hardware transcoding at that point in time, which isn't a huge issue, but did make it harder to run if you had a client that didn't support a specific codec.

While jellyfin requires zero internet to be functional and login, supported hardware transcoding before plex and has multiple user accounts usage out of the box, at zero cost.

Maybe it should be a parents job to parent, and not leave it to governments and companies to parent children.

Most of these issues that age verification is trying to solve is a parenting issues. A teen is still going to likely find a way around this nonsense without any repercussions. It's a parents job to teach children how to be safe in public spaces and the etiquette required.

No idea why systemd is even bending a knee to any of this at all. Doesn't even seem like a problem systems should ever try resolve. That should be a distro maintner issue at worst case.

Well if you still like your hardware, and want continued, updated, software support, one of the BSD's still likely to get you there for a bit longer. NetBSD likely being the one that drops it last.

But at some point, as long as you able to do your work and copy data back and forth, does it matter. Even just running winXP or 7 will get you along for sometime.

FreeDOS will always support x86, lol.

At least you not running something with an old big edian PowerPC machine. Support for those suck!

Does the machine a a socketed CPU, it appeared it runs the Core2 CPUs, if you get a core2duo, those support 64bit. I have a ThinkPad x60 with a 32bit Core2 CPU. It's odd that there was 32bit only version of that class of CPU. I haven't bothered to try upgrade it though.

The BSD's are embracing xlibre, so it is a project that's being taken seriously and has real technical merits.
