I bought a Raspberry Pi a few months ago and I feel strangely prepared. I wanted to use Home Assistant to have greater control over my devices since Philips Hue's app seemed limited.

I feel like a sucker for falling for Philip's marketing but at least I can use zigbee. I have now decoupled myself from their Hue Hub and app. Unfortunately I now have a wasteful hub sitting around. I have it posted for free on the classifieds in hopes it will disappear.

Reading articles like these really makes me believe I am autistic. Fortunately I have a doctor appointment soon to see about a proper diagnosis.

I was terminated a year ago from my last job for speaking out against the abusive behaviour of management as well as all the hate and bigotry from the tradespeople working on the workshop floor. That didn't go over well so I went to corporate and was assisting them with an investigation into the abuse at my company. Unfortunately that investigation had to be halted as my company fired me conveniently after I made a call to the employee hotline about all the abusive behaviour. I was advised to call the hotline by corporate so they weren't too happy with my company. So unhappy that they refused to represent them at the labour board regarding my wrongful termination case.

I think what was interesting about the whole experience was that many of my coworkers could not comprehend that I did all this to help my fellow coworkers. I wanted change so we could all be treated with dignity. Even now with the lawyer involved, they think I'm in it for the payout. I do not care about the money. I want change. I want accountability. Fortunately I have a couple people in my life that understand that and are encouraging me to follow what I think is right. Everyone else thinks I'm an idiot and there are no words to describe how confusing that truly is.

I had been involved with the labour board over a wrongful termination dispute. I made complaints about about an abusive workplace and was shitcanned as a result.

During the final settlement where the lawyers were fighting over what my settlement payment would be, my lawyer and I had a bit of a discussion revolving around mental health.

She suggested I should consider a move into mental health services as I was essentially writing off continuing my trade apprenticeship by this point. She noted that I am a good listener and have a very clear understanding of mental health. She even offered to get me in contact with those in the mental health field.

It's been heavily on my mind to go down that path but a part of me is intimidated. I've been able to help a few close friends who all experienced some heavy mental issues over the past couple years but these are people who I've become close to and am able to help them through a deep understanding of them.

I tend to get attached to people easily and I'm not sure how I'll be able to separate work thoughts from my own thoughts meant for my own time. What heavy burdens will make it home with me?

Would I be good at working in such a field? According to my lawyer and those closest to me, I'd be great. But what am I going to do about my own mental health if I follow that path path? I can barely handle children and I'm the biggest kid in my own life. It's already a monumental effort to keep myself fed and not spontaneously running into traffic.

I spent a few years of my life backpacking in a few countries and learned how how to manage my stuff in order to live out of a 35 litre backpack. I had to be mindful of what I took with me with such limited space.

I've since carried that approach to my life at home and tend to be proactive in dealing with what I buy and own. One way I try to be proactive is to make a list of stuff I want or think I need instead of buying it as soon as possible. Most times something sits on the list for a long time and I'll just remove it. It's a good indicator that I don't need to buy it and it will only cause more clutter. This is sort of something I made up over time to work around my adhd impulsiveness so it may or may not help others.

I've always saw the bias against women on reddit until about a week ago when I got a chance to really understand that it's more like pure, unfiltered hate against women.

I rarely post to social media because it's a huge energy drain on me but I decided to make a post on a support subreddit regarding toxic masculinity. I talked about how I was a target for bullying and harassment for not being 'manly' and shared experiences of witnessing gross and manipulative behaviour against women and lgbt+ people.

I received a lot of positive feedback. Some men spoke up about seeing the same, unacceptable behaviour from their coworkers. Some women confirmed what I said was true and a few were happy just being validated.

My post had to be removed because the moderator of that subreddit had been receiving threats about my post. My post didn't violate any of the reddit or the subreddit rules. Some very angry individuals who couldn't read the nuance in my post had claimed it was hate speech.

The moderator contacted me and thanked me for talking about such topics. Ultimately she couldn't deal with the hate that was being directed at her, which I completely understand.

That whole incident really opened my eyes to just how much hate women get on that site. Leaving reddit for good got so much easier after that.

After playing Battlefield 3 and feeling an indescribable emptyness for AAA games, I turned to indie developers. The desire for more profits can really suck the uniqueness and character from a game when it's designed for accessibility to as many people as possible.

Bonus points if the game supports modding. It's a great way to extend the life of a game as well. Some of my first online gaming memories are from Quake and it's modding scene. Even Sven Co-op is still developing their mod for Half-Life to this very year.

Games like that seem to have a bit more passion behind it which gives it a bit more charm. It's been a bit sad watching old titles milked dry throughout the years in the name of the mighty dollar. Unfortunately the struggle now is finding those gems in a sea of mediocrity as gaming became more mainstream.

I joined r/minimalism when it was a young but already established subreddit. The message back then was to ensure what you owned brought some sort of value to your life. It was a bit broad and ambiguous for a reason. We are all unique and there is no one size fits all minimalism.

It quickly turned into a strange mix of ideals. Minimalistic aesthetics such as clean edges and blank walls took over. There was also a competition brewing between those could own the least amount of things. Suddenly you could buy happiness with minimalism. Buy that smooth, round edged minimalistic table and fancy multi-purpose item to show how minimalistic you are. I had to unsubscribe because of how soulless it began to feel.

It feels like capitalism and white washing good intentions can really suck the authenticity out of anything and everything.

I ended up getting fired for calling out all the sexism, racism, homophobia, favourtism and abusive managers. The then new covid policies ramped up everyone's negative traits and I couldn't ignore it any more.

I ended up speaking with the corporate HR about the situation and they made an honest effort to help me but I was fired before I got a chance to speak with a very high up person.

I got a lawyer involved and while not much difference was made after the settlement, I somehow forced the HR manager into early retirement. It amazes me considering my goal was only to get her into a work behavior training course. I never knew such pettiness could accomplish so much.

All my co-workers shat all over my efforts for the 10 months I was engaged with all of that at the workplace. Also received a fair amount of hate from my co-workers after I got fired too which was neat.

I keep these species of springtails for my terrariums. If you disturb them, they may jump which is a way to identify them. They can jump something like 50x they're body length so it's pretty easy to notice.

They are beneficial and very useful of my terrariums. Springtails help control mold and fungus growth while the isopods (terrestrial shrimp) break down larger matter like feces, leaf litter and food.

I think I also read that they are good for plant roots as they help aerate the soil as they crawl around. I'm not an expert but read quite a bit about making bioactive terrariums where these are used frequently.

The supervisor in question definitely trash talked all of his "subordinates" but I don't think it was particularly effective in this instance. He is past retirement age and his interpersonal skills are completely lacking which made him universally hated among workers and management. But he always said yes to management. So that makes him a useful idiot.

If I worked in the office, I could definitely see this tactic being more effective. It was very common to see trade supervisors battling it out with other trade supervisors. The workers were all united through misery.

The majority of the trades people I worked with were hyper focused on their masculinity by focusing their lives around marriage, children, cars, property and expensive things to express themselves. All those things require money. The people I worked with always needed money.

So when all the answers to your problems is more money, how do you understand and treat someone whose motivations are not driven by money? How do you react when someone challenges authority and is still not motivated by money? Even when I plainly tell them why I am acting the way I am, they truly have a difficult time understanding me because money is so important to them.

They also believe that change is impossible so I'm an idiot for trying. Personally, there's nothing more motivating to me than being told I can't do something.

That's one way capitalism can work. Capitalism, like anything created by humans, is complex. The way you described how capitalism works seems to put all the blame on the people with the least power or knowledge in the whole process.

Corporations have the money to advertise their products, bribe politicians, lobby governments, threaten or deal with whistleblowers, suppress information and research or destroy foreign environments for resources to continually gain more power. That's not a complete list either. The things these entities would do to exploit everything to increase their quaterly profits is horrifying.

Where I live, our regional government official works hand in hand with businesses and corporations to completely gut health care and education while giving away all our green land to build more expensive homes.

If individuals truly had control over capitalism as you suggest, then they will soon be too tired from being over worked, sick from lack of healthcare, possibly homeless, and under educated to know any better to make better decisions, or fight back.

Corporations have the wealth to change things but it seems ruthless manipulation and exploitation are their favourite tools. I don't see how these tools can continue endlessly on this finite planet. You can't exploit a lifeless planet with dead slaves but they just can't see past their quarterly profits.

I'd say a good way to approach this is to find a tattoo artist with a style you appreciate and ask them to draw something up for you.

Many artists these days have online portfolio's of their previous works (usually instagram) for you to view and get inspiration from. If not, they may also have books at their physical location for you to browse.

Once you find an artist with a style you enjoy, simply tell them what you want and they will be happy to draw something up for you and will be happy to accomodate any changes so you are satisfied with what will be permanently in your skin.

If you need a starting point, look up all your local tattoo studios and visit their website. Find the artist page or portfolio page and find a style that resonates with you. If you can't find anything local, consider expanding your search to other nearby big cities. For something permanent like a tattoo, it may be worth your time to travel (within reason) to an artist.

Hope this helps

I also use task.org and have found a nice set of customization options that works for me.

Because I'm juggling different tasks with different priorities, I sort by immediacy and importance. Anything time sensitive has dates and alarms attached to it. Any tasks I wish to do currently or the next day is always moved to 'HighPriority' including any appointments.

Medium and low priority stuff are things that have distant due dates or no due dates.

I also use colours to visually show priorities I set for the day as well as adding comments to help add any extra context. Keeping titles simple is important for me to keep my data visually accessible.

Most important is that I keep a widget on my home screen so that I always see what my tasks. Any step between seeing my tasks and staying on top of my tasks is a chance for something to be forgotten. It took me nearly half a year to get into the habit of using this app to organize myself but has helped me a lot.

I also have a couple more lists for shopping and repeated reminders to help me stay on track too.

Hopefully this is a good example of how someone can use these tools for themselves.

I've used linux sporadically throughout my life and only started using it daily in the last couple months. I've used ubuntu in the past but I can understand the reason to move away from commercial distributions. Since my knowledge of Linux is quite shallow, I have a ton of questions and a need to understand everything.

What is Debian and what makes it an appropriate choice for Linux Mint to switch over to this base?

Also, what values does the development of Debian have compared to Ubuntu?

I get the feeling that moving away from Ubuntu is a step in the direction of a more open source space away from corporate forced standards, is that accurate? If so, what development direction could this take for a project like Linux Mint?

I joked with my last girlfriend that she would have had more success flirting with a wall. She tried to sit on my lap at one point and I still never got the hint.

Flirting is such an ambiguous game where you talk and act around being interested while never explicitly saying you're interested. It's similar to how people talk to each other using colourful phrases without meaning to say something. For example, "state of the art" is such an empty phrase to express modernity. Modern art, modern technology, modern science, modern standard of living could all be "state of the art." Flirting, like modern language, is so ambiguous that it's a confusing mess for me to navigate.

She did eventually learn to be more direct with me but still got annoyed because I didn't flirt with her. While it didn't work out with her, it helped me understand that I'd rather be with myself than to try and play a game that was designed around ambiguity. If someone is interested in me and is direct about it, I will be far more receptive to see where things go. Being direct is a great sign of compatability for me. Honesty about one's self is also a a great indicator of a good person too.

I realized a long time ago that I a higher standard for who I want to be with so I never really pursued a relationship even though I'd like to be in one. The hardest part about that choice is dealing with the judgement and shaming that comes from others for not being in a relationship.

I asked a similar question and I was lead to this post.

I got side tracked and eventually lost motivation to get it working. I might give it another try in the new year. Hopefully this is what you are looking for. I assume your distribution is using PipeWire, otherwise you may have to look into HRIR for PulseAudio.
