Let me tell you a secret: any linux distribution is a kernel + a set of pre-installed drivers and programs + their configs. Nothing more than that! Most distributions use the same kernel and roughly the same set of programs. The only differences are in the desktop environment and initial settings.

I would recommend Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE) as a start choice. Do not trust those who say that if you choose a “beginner's distro” you won't have to get into the console or text configs. Your choice of distro will determine how often you'll do this.

As a regular user, I've used different distributions and always something didn't work. Many issues couldn't be solved via GUI, so I had to deep dive into both the console and all Linux services.

P.S. Arch Linux daily-driver.

I had no problem with the previous two frontends (Piped, Invidious). But the main problem with this type of application is that when an enough number of users are reached, YouTube starts banning requests from their instances. Have the authors of this frontend thought about how they will solve this?

I'm surprised no one's posted about Skiff.

Agreed! Many times I faced the fact that the Chrome developers don't follow the W3C standards, but they require it from Mozilla. Therefore, some functionality will only work in Chrome, but not in Mozilla (it's not their bad!).

Fantlab for the Russian-speaking community. Couldn't find anything better on the Anglosphere internet.

LibraryThing for English-speaking people. I use it for the rest.

I really enjoyed the game in many aspects, especially some of the mechanics and art style.

But I eventually dropped it. Two reasons:

  • In many cases, success depends not on your skill, but on luck and random.
  • It's a roguelike (roguelite).

Honestly, if they added some depth to the core mechanics and complexity that depends on skill rather than random events on the map and resource types, it would be one of my favorite games. As it is...

Some do. E.g. lemmy.world.

For some instances, email can be filled and isn't mandatory. E.g. beehaw.org.

Now it's completely dependent on Bing's results! I'd even say it does a worse job than Bing. I compared results for different queries and Bing was much better than Qwant! In fact, if you read their privacy policy, they sell your private data to anyone who asks for it.

Seems that's true. Text-only communication in Briar is built by design. I see this from its communication scheme. I don't think any other message options will come up. So I am also on it in case of the Internet outage. Besides, you can chat properly only when you and your contact are both online. Not a very handy option for daily use.

So SimpleX.Chat for privacy and Matrix for public groups.

I recognize Starlink's advantage over other providers, but just compare the number of satellites they have.

  • Viasat: 2, plans to launch a third.
  • HughesNet: 3.
  • Starlink: Over 3,000. Plans to increase to 12,000. Each of them must be replaced every 5 years. At the same time, SpaceX doesn't yet have any ideas on how to bring old satellites down to Earth.

WTF?! Starlink provides such a better service to justify the multiple satellite count difference? This is despite the fact that they have a short lifespan and often go out of their orbit and smash into space debris, increasing the amount of space debris. Huh...

Wow! This is the first time I've heard about Knaben Database, but it looks handy. Thanks a bunch for the recommendation.

Yeah.

The video author can enable a setting to analyze the comments. YouTube itself flags comments that it deems inappropriate. The author only chooses which videos to include this tweak and the level of strictness.

It is enabled by default.

Comments that may be spam, self-promotion, gibberish, and otherwise potentially inappropriate will automatically be held for review in YouTube Studio and will only be published if you approve them. If you want a higher level of protection for your channel, increasing strictness will increase the number of comments held for review.

We are together with you in favor of XMPP (I am with both hands)! You just "won't sell" that kind of solution to very many people. We are already living in a zoo of messengers. We need to come up with at least two that will cover all the basic needs and offer sufficient privacy.

Matrix's groups have an important difference from SimpleX. Even if the primary server is gone, the related servers will still have the copies.
