By these rules, Gone with the Wind likely wins.

But it's still not a good comparison because of other factors. First off, movie theaters didn't used to compete with television, cable, video games, DVDs, streaming, or social media for your free time. The industry was also a lot smaller, meaning there were fewer high profile movies dividing up that whole pie. The lack of practical home video also meant popular films like Gone with the Wind would get frequently re-issued and continue racking up ticket sales.

It is essentially impossible to accurately compare the popularity of any two movies separated by more than a decade or two.

How is this false story still getting pushed to the top?

We literally just had a thread about it earlier this week. It was debunked.

The same story came up years ago, and it was debunked then too.

People will just believe anything these days.

There's a Lemmy instance perfect for you then: exploding-heads.

They were never profitable and can never be profitable because the fundamental concept of what they do is thoroughly flawed

I actually don't believe this part. Reddit isn't profitable because they have 2,000 employees on their payroll when they could probably get by with < 500. They hired all these engineers, and then put them on go-nowhere projects like NFTs, rather than improving their core platform.

If Reddit actually put that effort into making their app comparable to something like Apollo, I have no doubt plenty of users wouldn't have minded shelling out for Premium instead of paying a similar price for a third party product. Hell, if they came out tomorrow and tied third party app API access to Reddit Premium membership, they might even turn profitable overnight.

Fancy car, it's not even close.

Simply storing and maintaining a whole boat is way more of a logistical nightmare than I ever want to deal with for a supposed "leisure" activity. And that's before we get into the cost.

PWAs always feel way clunkier than a proper native iOS app.

I fully believe the reason Apollo was the best Reddit app, period, is because it was 100% native and fully embraced all the design patterns used throughout the rest of iOS. No amount of flashy CSS or fancy javascript frameworks can fully re-create that level of cohesion.

Presumably, discovery is a lot better.

Having used both Twitter and Mastadon, discovery on Mastadon is essentially impossible. You have to already know who you want to follow, there is no mechanism in place to help you actually find content you might be interested in.

Microsoft owns Mojang, but by most accounts they are very hands-off with the company. I don't think Microsoft proper had any input on this decision.

Xbox controllers are a good common denominator. All the platforms you mention have official support for them.

Most recommended alternatives you will find simply emulate an Xbox controller for this reason.

Have they? VRR support in Linux is still a total crapshoot in my experience. VRR doesn't work at all with multiple displays in X.

Reddit:- You Google Reddit and your first result is Reddit.com. You click the link and are presented with the front page. You from scroll from a few hours and end up signing up and staying.

I don't think this is the path most people take to becoming new Reddit users.

I think most people end up using new social media sites because they get linked to content already on a given site that they like. This could be from friends sharing links, or through Google results from the site.

Not hard at all. I can already tell you I liked Everything Everywhere All at Once (this year’s BP winner) way more than Dances with Wolves.

1991 is a uniquely weak year for the Academy though. You might have had a stronger argument with 1994 or 1995, but I can still think of plenty of movies released in the last decade that I would rank up there with Schindler's List or Pulp Fiction.

The entire design philosophy of GNOME drives me up a wall. Who in their right mind decided we don't need minimize buttons on our windows?

Is Reddit winning? It seems too early to tell.

Their refusal to change doesn't mean they are succeeding. The absolute mess that /r/all became over the weekend is already hurting their ability to sell ads.

Even if Reddit removes all the moderators from these thousands of protesting subreddits and replaces them with people willing to tow the line, that will only stem the bleeding short-term. As the most talented moderators and creators continue leaving the platform, Reddit will slowly lose it's ability to produce content that keeps people reading.

Digg and Myspace didn't die in a week.

The AI boom started last year, it's the reason prices are already high. So I'm skeptical that they are going to get higher, seeing as this whole AI thing feels like a bubble.

The problem is that we are reaching a point where it is cheaper to achieve the same or better results with OLED or microLED than by dumping even more money into improving LCD.

We are already at a point where OLED provides a straight up better value than LCD in higher end price brackets as long as peak brightness is not your #1 priority.

Yes, but right now it’s inaccessible. My moderator queue is flooded with people trying to access information they need and know is on my subreddit because it was still the top result in their Google search.

I’m not reopening my subreddit any time in the near future, but there is absolutely collateral damage here. When the dust settles I may choose to move my subreddit from private to read-only.
