Of course this is all for security reasons so we don't download these evil and malicious apps from well known appstores like F-Droid. Thank you Google for parenting me so well and kindly, I would have never known how to stay protected.
Majority of users don't use custom ROMs.Who wants to develop an app with no audience? Who wants to develop open source software on a platform that is more and more behind closed doors. I see why developer don't agree with their terms. We need the right to use the software we want on our devices.
Look and feelwise it is basically stock android but with extra privacy and security features added. You can go completely google free or install their services in a sanbox with no special privileges. What are you using right now? And what is your goal?
